Review: 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 LS

When you see a new car advertised as “one at this price,” it’s generally not a bad guess that there’s a reason it’s so cheap.

The Chevrolet Aveo5 driven for this week’s review takes that to the extreme.

It has crank windows and manual locks and mirrors. It has a stickshift instead of an automatic. It has no cruise control. It has no CD player. It has no air conditioning. It’s a car designed to be advertised, not to be bought.

I recommend this reviewer read the April 2009 Car and Driver on page 24

A Stripper Exposed: Nissan made its most affordable car, the Versal sedan, even more affordable for '09 when it lowered the price by $2890. The result is a $10,685 Versa 1.6 base. We wondered: Just what does a cheapskate have to give up?

Bare Market: Manual mirrors are unpainted; there are only four exterior colors.

Losing power: The smaller 1.6 liter engine is down 15 horses to 107.

Inches matter: 14-inch wheels versus 15 inchers

Key my car: There is no remote key fob to open the doors or trunk.

Time out: There's no clock.

Sing out: Good, there's no radio!

Total Darkness: Seats, trim, and plastic are black, and there is no lighting in the glove box or trunk.

Sweat equity: Air conditioning is a $1000 option.

A gear down: The stripper comes only with a five speed manual.

Roll 'em: Windows and locks are manual.

Butt aches: Could it be the thinner seat padding?

GM is not the only company to offer these "For advertising only" vehicles.

I recommend you read the review I posted, which discusses the base Vesa. The difference is that all the Versa 1.6s I've seen had air conditioning, so none were being offered under $10,000.

Your Versa right up is pretty fair. I think you are being a little kind on that interior. I chose to drive one once as a rental for a week. Like the Aveo, if I have a choice I will not choose to do that again.

If you read the reviews, they hardly come across as "professional" at all. This seems more like a college co-op program.

Bradyholt is a member (and therefore a reader....probably) here so I don't see a problem where he sticks his reviews. He actively contributes in other parts of the forum as well.

And thank you Brady, for illustrating that the Aveo is ridiculously overpriced... much like the G6. I don't know if your professor allows it, but I think you should ask him/her how to improve your style to be a bit more involving and entertaining. I read the whole thing, but there were times I had to force myself to keep going and finish for a fellow student. I'm not saying I'm better than you (because I'm not), but you can be better than you are now.
