Review: 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Quote:
Especially when it’s painted in Utility Company White, this Chevrolet Silverado looks like nothing more than a basic bare-bones work truck, interchangeable with dozens of other basic bare-bones work trucks that General Motors and other automakers have produced over the years.

It’s true, this truck is no luxury vehicle. You don’t really want a luxury vehicle when you’re motoring through a gloppy mixture of mud and manure at the Tantallon Cattle Company in Maryland’s Washington suburbs...

One year old, and the same as the current model. Why not?

It's not that bare-bones.

Check out the chrome grille and bumper.

Right, it's an LT instead of a Work Truck. However, a Duramax Work Truck is still over $40k too.

Re: Review: 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

I read the review on this truck. My question is "what type of person would quote gas mileage from a gas engine on a diesel powered truck?" The 6.6 diesel can get up to 25 mpg highway and 17 city empty. I have done a lot of research on this truck on fuel economy and as a road tester this guy should learn to follow through. Why didn't he use the DIC for mileage. Yes I know that hand calculation is more accurate, This tester totally lost me with that observation. The Silverado and its Sierra counterpart are very good trucks, and I was glad to see that he recognized that part of the review. People who buy 3/4 ton diesel trucks either use them to tow RV's or for their work. And there are some diehard truck guys out there who buy diesel, just for a diesel.
My two cents worth, sorry about the rant.

There are no standardized mpg ratings for the diesel trucks, but nothing I've found suggests there's much more than 1 mpg difference in favor of the diesels. I quoted the other mileage just to give some faint context of full-size truck miles per gallon, not to suggest that was what the diesel model would return.

Using the trip computer wouldn't have generated a usable number either, because the driving was not representative of normal use and wouldn't be able to be compared to any other vehicle.

Re: Review: 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

This is a link to the dieselpage and the mileage on the 2004.5 duramax diesel
http://www.thedieselpage.com/mileage.htm

You will notice that I am from Canada, our gallons are larger than yours, hence the 25 mpg. I used google to search for "duramax diesel mileage", the above link was what I found over a year ago. Motor Trend magazine ran an article in their Jan/Feb 2009 issue that shows a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD with the diesel, (The article I am pointing to is on page 34) the driver lives in Sante-Therese, Quebec, Canada and he gets 24 mpg when not towing and 13 when he does. The picture shows him towing a dual axle 5th wheel trailer. All I am saying is that 20 plus mpg is possible. All you have to do is search.

None of those numbers are usable for comparison to a gas version or other vehicles. The only standardized mileage test I've seen of a gasoline vs. diesel is a Consumer Reports review, and the diesel engines were close to the gas ones for each of the Big Three pickups.
