Most of you have probably seen the new Malibu Maxx commercial, where a Malibu sedan and Trailblazer go “dancing” and then park in the garage together. Then in the morning the garage door opens, and out comes a Malibu Maxx. That commercial is very true, the Malibu Maxx combines the fun, versatile factor of a SUV tied with the quality; looks from the Malibu. Together, they make a perfect match.

The exterior of the Malibu Maxx is very unique--but in a good way. When looking at the Maxx from a front-quarter view, you could easily mistake the Maxx for a sedan. However, when you look at the side of it and discover that there is no closing between the cargo area and backseats, you know it’s not a sedan.

I personally like the exterior of the Maxx. It has a “cool” factor about it that I like, not too many wagons (or should I say ’Sport Wagons,’ as GM calls it) have a cool factor about them. Another thing I noticed about the Maxx is that it gives off this “Drive Me! Drive Me!” vibe. That may sound crazy, but it is almost like the car is telling you to drive it through the exterior design.

Once you enter the interior of the Maxx you could easily mistake it as a Toyota product. The dash is laid-out very well, and smartly designed. One thing that struck me was that the dash is actually soft to the touch (Car And Driver should be proud)! GM is really cleaning up their act when it comes to interiors, the Maxx is proof of that.

All Maxx’s come with two (well one divided in two) fixed sunroofs over the rear seats. Each of which has a roll-out “sunshade” to block the sun. I had difficulty getting the sunshades to stay over the glass. Every time I thought I got it latched, it would snap back and make very load noise. I don’t understand why they didn’t just tint the shades more, or have a solid shade cover it like conventional sunroofs.

The Maxx I drove also had GM’s factory-installed remote vehicle start system. That is by-far one of the best features GM has had! It is such a convenience to simply push the button and, wow, the Maxx comes to life!

Malibu Maxx has a rear cargo system in the hatch that is actually useful! There is a pull-out flat platform that can act as a shelf or table. There are two levels that the platform can sit on, and then you can pull down the table leg and the platform turns into a table that sticks out of the rear.

Driving the Maxx is as fun as the exterior design is. All Maxx’s come with a 3500 V6 powertrain, pumping out 200 horsepower. It may not be the fastest car on the market, but does a family car need to be super-fast? The power is suitable for the car. My only complaint is the electric steering, which causes you to not be able to fell the road, but being a G6 owner I am use to it.

The ride quality was also excellent! The area that I drove the Maxx in has terrible roads, and the Maxx glided right over the bumps and hole seamlessly. I have never rode in a new Camry, but I find it hard that it could be any better.

Overall the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx is a prime choice for the ever-so-large family car market. Even if you don’t think a wagon is for you, check it out! You might surprise yourself. Plus, the kids will love the backseat!

Pros: Cool exterior, lots of features, nice ride.

Cons: Firm seats, numb steering.

This car is growing on me. I think it has a little bit of coolness to it. Its somewhat unique in a world of me too sedans. Unlike the G6, it doesn't pretend to be a sport sedan. It just promises to be a really good family vehicle with a few cool surprises, and it comes through.

Really I was never a Maxx fan until I drove that one. The look is cool after you take the time to give it a good look and inspection.

The good thing about the MAXX is the wheelbase and the short overhang - not like a station wagon of the old days at all to drive.

Great review nsap!

Can I make one suggestion though? Instead of using professional pictures of the MAXX, it would be much better if you would take some pictures yourself.

About the interior... it may be well laid out, simple, and soft to the touch... but all I see is grey, grey, grey, and a couple islands of dark grey... BLAH!!! Camry's are more to look at on the dash than the Maxx is... if only they'd add some color, I'd be far more satisfied, as well as many other people...

Other than that, I've always liked the Maxx... I'm not always for wagons (the Magnum is cool though), but as you said, it isn't quite a wagon... it's between wagon and hatch... anyway, ya... good review!

The "all grey" interior does look like crap in that particular pic, it looks much better in person.

These are the two best pictures I've found of the Malibu (interior). Although this is not a MAXX, they are basically the same. If I was to ever get a MAXX, this is without a doubt the interior color combo I would go for.

For the price, nothing even comes close. Too bad the automotive press doesn't realize that.

Normally I would have, but the day I drove the Maxx it was raining and very cold. So pics would not have came out too great.

Here are some pics of the Maxx I took a while back:

I wanted a Maxx for my first car when they came out..Lol....But I would still take one if I weren't getting an Escape or 6. The Malibu marked the start of a changing brand.

The one thing I can honestly say about GM is although many of their interiors are considerably outdated they are very well arranged. Everything is right where it should be and nothing obstructs you from geting to certain controls or areas of the dash. They have truely come an incredibly long way, for themselves. Even if they are not up to par with all of the other vehicles out today, they still deserve a congratulations.

The beige two tone interior combo in the Malibu is nice, and the wood grain stuff is good touch. GM seriously needs to get off of the monotone gray trip.

The grey interior in that pic does look horrible, and makes me double check that I have the same interior in mine. First, the interior is a two tone grey, yet you cannot make it out in that picture. Also, the grey room that the car is in also adds to the "sea of grey" effect. In real life, when the sun hits the inside, the interior actualy looks good. I didnt like the tan/wood idea...too Buick for me.

I agree.

When I test drove a MAAX a year or so ago, the first one I got into had the gray interior. Strongly disliked it, though I wasn't sure, at the time, why. Since that one was sitting in the showroom, the dealer led me out to the parking lot where I spotted a dark blue with tan interior MAAX. I opened the door, saw the woodgrain trim and immediately realized why I didn't like the gray interior...too gray, not enough varied colors, imho.

*shrugs*

I miss the days of different colored interiors....

Same here knightfan. Seems all there is now is Grey,Tan and maybe if it is a sporty/sports car Black. The Impala does have dark blue though but thats about the only one. Looking at the stuff for my Bonneville you could get 5 colors in a 1981 Bonneville. Times change. The 1979 Impala I had too had the choice of at least 5 colors.

The current impala has dark blue?

I thought it and the current monte carlo were the same interior-option wise...and, as far as I know, the current mc does not have dark blue interior available....
