I'll have a 2010 Forester for a week; any questions I should look to answer?

I'm scheduled to pick it up tomorrow morning, I believe a 2.5XS automatic. Is there anything about the car anyone is particularly curious about or interested in?

Try to contact he manufacturer and find out why a 4 speed auto is OK in 2010. I'd be curious what their statement is.

I'm going to predict something about how they're rolling out CVTs now. But I will ask.

I had a 2005 (I think) rental.

Let me know if
1.) the seats still suck,
2.) the radio sucks, and
3.) it drives like a VW Beetle (the old kind).

Regards from the cave,

We have considered one in the past for our family, and may do so again in the future. So, I'd like to know how they hold up in a crash, please. Thanks!

Seriously, I'd be curious to know how well it handles (compared to say something from Volkswagen that handles quite well), it's quietness, it's acceleration (onto freeways mostly) and mpg's.

That's what I'm thinking as well. They did recently say they're thinking of expanding CVT use in the future; I can't see them waiting until the next redesign to offer one, maybe for an MCE?

And with the Forester turbo using the four-speed auto as well and the new Legacy not offering the turbo with an automatic, I wonder if there's a future for the turbo engine in the Forester?...

The local lease deal here is a giveaway at 500 down 234 a month with leather...

Is it a dog? Can it get out of its own way? Do you enjoy driving it? Hows the ride?

Is it worth 234 a month lease with just 500 down (24 month lease) ?

Some initial responses after driving today:

It's not quiet.
It's acceptably powerful, but needs a low gear to get up a steep hill at speed.
It rides well.

I hope I don't have to crash-test it.

My previous generation Forester held up very well in a nasty crash.

brady: having not driven an automatic Forester before I'm a bit disappointed to hear that they're on the slow side with an auto. The Boxer makes a lot of low end torque for a four cylinder. Do you know what the differential ratios are in it?

I don't have the numbers, no. And I'm not sure it's fair to say the Forester is slow -- it's as zippy as any other 4-cylinder all-wheel-drive compact SUV. But none is really quick.

Would it be comfy to take a long car ride in?

Wonder if you could take a ride around the block in a new 4 cyl Nox while you're used to the Forester. Id be curious if it was quieter, more comfortable, and better suited to suburban driving.

I don't need to drive them back-to-back for that one. The Equinox is the easy winner in ride smoothness and quietness in the small SUV class. I drove seven 2009 compact SUVs in the spring pretty much back-to-back -- the Forester among them -- and the only one that impressed at all for overall refinement was the Toyota RAV4. Meanwhile, ride and quietness are the Equinox's strong points. Those qualities jumped out when I drove one over the summer.

However, which is "better suited to suburban driving" is more variable. Some might be put off by the Equinox's extra bulk over the Forester, which is certainly more maneuverable and has much better visibility.

Full details of the Forester's cargo-carrying abilities, along with more photos:

Also, filled up today. Average mileage so far: 27.7 mpg.
