Comparison review: six subcompact hatchbacks

In the week it spent with the DC Car Examiner, the new 2010 Kia Soul Sport impressed for its handling and interior space but didn't demonstrate the highest levels of power, refinement or fuel economy.

But do any similar cars do a better job?

People are more likely to actually read it if there isn't a huge amount that comes out at once, but if you prefer to see everything at the same time, just check back next Sunday and it will all be there.

Tempest used to be the F-85 cousin, but the T1000/Acadian was the Chevette cousin.

Really though, after comparing the competition on price, economy and warranty, as well as sensually massaging the interiors of all of these cars, the G3 has a pretty good shot. The only real disadvantages I see are the fact that you can't get ABS with the manual and the side impact test scores are a little behind the competition.

Sixth place: Pontiac G3

To anyone following the subcompact car market, the last-place finish of the Pontiac G3 is probably not a surprise. Pontiac is a lame duck brand; General Motors has already announced it will die. The new G3 is nearly identical to the Chevrolet Aveo5, which dates to 2004 without a full redesign. And the Aveo has been criticized since it was new for mediocre interior quality, relatively little cargo space, and unexceptional gas mileage.

With all that going against it, how could the G3 possibly beat more modern competitors?

It actually comes surprisingly close...

5th place: Suzuki SX4

Fans of the Suzuki SX4 call it an unappreciated gem for its interior room, handsome looks, and agile handling.

Thanks to its available all-wheel-drive – Suzuki calls this hatchback a “crossover” because of that feature – the SX4 offers all-weather capability in a very compact and inexpensive package. And the ride and handling is more stable than the subcompact norm.

Unfortunately, the SX4 recalls the days before the average subcompact car had decent pep...

Fourth place: Nissan Cube

The Nissan Cube is designed to be noticed. Everything about the car’s styling and marketing – it’s not a car, it’s a “personal mobility device” – cries out for attention. Its mix of boxy and rounded shapes is a theme carried over throughout the interior, and available features like a piece of carpet that’s attached to the top of the dashboard, all suggests that this car should be fun.

I liked the 2nd generation Cube Squared much more than the Americanized 3rd generation. At least in Japan you can still get a column shift.

The Cube now takes the honor of ugliest most lame asinine new vehicles entries in recent history award. And the rubber band option should be offered in rainbow colors to match the sticker on the back window.
