Borrowing a 1976 Eldorado convertible tomorrow

A family friend is lending me his 1976 Eldorado tomorrow. Besides the obvious, anything in particular anyone would like me to find out about it?

EDIT: full review and photo gallery posted: http://www.examiner.com/x-1017-DC-Ca...do-convertible

He's more partial to that car than his firstborn.

Get a one way ticket out of the country should anything happen to it.

pretty ironic, a co-worker of mine has the same model, in silver that always offers it to me also! Perhaps I should have taken him up on it this summer! Oh well...

How's the torque steer?

Be sure to document the "scissor" action convertible top.

yeah, I've heard that they don't have any, but I find it hard to believe that a fwd car with a 500ci V8, even the emissions choked ones, wouldn't have some torque steer

Hopefully we'll find out soon. I'm not positive but being that the engine is mounted longitudinally, it may have equal length CV shafts

Re: Borrowing a 1976 Eldorado convertible tomorrow

They really dont have torque steer, the engine is mounted in the traditional north-south position with the transmission split behind and to the side of the engine. I have to ask why you are borrowing it? Do you need to go collect from your "ladies"and your regular pimp mobile is in the shop?(dont think I am being a jerk, I am an Eldo owner!), besides pimping aint easy..........and much harder in a rented orange Cobalt!

Re: Borrowing a 1976 Eldorado convertible tomorrow

I noticed no torque steer, and I'd say it's because the steering is so loose. When you can spin the steering wheel nearly 45 degrees in either direction before the wheels turn, you're not going to be feeling much of anything.

You noticed no torque steer because the engine is mounted longitudinally. The power is more evenly distributed in this set-up. Another reason is that the engine in a 1976 Eldorado produces maybe 200 HP. This with the weight of the car doesn't leave much power to upset things.

Torque steer is a problem mainly in transverse-mount engines since the crankshaft is turning on the same axis as the axle along with higher power to weight ratio.

sounds like it needs a steering box (or tightening of the magic screw)

Re: Borrowing a 1976 Eldorado convertible tomorrow

My advice...drive slow...let the car pamper you...watch people stare

Unfortunatly as the decade of the 1970's past, so did the displacement...
From the begining of the decade the same engine had lost 50% of its listed displacement, from 400hp to nearly 200hp.

pimping aint easy
But somebody's got to do it!
