2008 Cadillac DTS

Had one of these as an Avis rental last weekend in Vegas. I haven't driven a Caddy sedan since those HT4100 messes of the mid 80's. But I was very impressed. Very comfortable driving, roomy enough for 5 adults, and the Northstar V-8 made more than adequate power, while returning 21.6 mpg in mostly city driving. I think its overpriced ($48K for an '09 equipped like the rental) but what isn't overpriced anymore? A really great car, too bad it has that geriatric stigma attached.

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

I would buy a Lucerne version of this car. Especially a fully loaded, with leather, with the color black on it.

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

Friends of ours have a 2003 Cadillac DeVille which is basically the same thing and I quite often drive it since I'm the designated driver. They really are a smooth and comfortable car to drive. 21.6 MPG is pretty respectable for city driving considering this is a V8 powered land yacht. What is disappointing with these cars is how badly they depreciate. I can buy a 2007 DTS for $25 grand when they cost almost $60 grand new. That is a pretty good price considering what you get with it, however the only time I would consider one is if it came with the parking sensors (you need them in tight spaces) and if gas prices were what they were 5 years ago.

I would consider a V8 Lucerne too if it were about $14K off and the Hyundai Genesis or Chrysler 300 didn't exist.

Otherwise, this platform is stuck in the 1980s and shouldnt' be associated with Cadillac or Buick. I've driven a V8 Lucerne and a DHS....comfortable, quiet, smooth, but with horrible steering and aweful proportions (massive front overhang!!) The Northstar V8/4 speed combo is also a thirsty slouch compared to GM's own 3.6L 6 speed combo and most of the Japanese V6 engines.

The T900 trucks seriously have better steering feel. I hear the DTS has a slightly better suspension than the Lucerne and old DHS, but it had better be a something radical to improve the steering.

Transanction prices are also right.

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

I rented an '05 Deville for a couple of weeks in '04 and I loved the way that car drove and rode. The '06 DTS I rented didn't seem nearly as nice to drive or ride in, but I love the DTS' styling and updated interior. Strangely I also thought the '05 Deville's standard audio system sounded much better than the Bose system in the '06.

The DTS should have been rear wheel drive from the start.

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

I hope that Cadillac does a MAJOR refresh of the body and interior since the all-new DTS/STS replacement has been pushed WAY out.....2014 I think now. Give it some design cues of the Sixteen and CTS, interior like the Chinese SLS. I had NO idea a DTS could cost $60,000!!!

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

I think (from what I can see) the geriatric stigma is self inflicted. I do "get" that type of styling though. It just doesn't fit with what I thought Caddy was supposed to be heading for. It seems to be a hang over from where Caddy was (which I suppose it is).

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

Even if it is RWD it could still have an old fart stigma, if it drove like the Lexus LS. While that would make for a nice Park Avenue, the DTS should be sporty somewhere between a S and a 7. It should have the features and a competitive price $69,990 but no we will never have that atleast until 2014. The BTS needs to come first, but the STS could use the SLS interior as a stopgap until the 2014 DTS can come out then make the STS an A7/CLS competitor.

The stigma is in peoples minds. Go ahead and buy one. If I were to replace my corolla, a Lucerne would be on my list of cars to possibly replace it.
Especially since you might be able to grab one with low miles for less than $20,000.00 quid

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

GM asked for $50 billion from congress to continue to be unproductive until the money runs out, when they will ask for another $50 billion.

I had to say it, but other than the DTS and Escalade, Cadillac is sort of a stand alone line that could be sold.

Unfortunately, it's probably the only division makeing money.

That was a cool crusing car. Very comfy and roomy too. Should be a great trip car as well.

Re: 2008 Cadillac DTS

The only thing that calms me when thinking about the DTS, is the thought of the GrandTownVictorian. I have been in a number of DTS Cadillacs, and I DO think they are great for what they are..but I dont accept that Cadillac has any buisiness being in the "for what they are" buisiness any more. It holds them down, IMO.

Yeah, but only if you load it with every option in the book like the adaptive cruise, most of the ones on the lot are around $46,000, which is not bad, a loaded CTS is in that neighborhood, hey you can load STS's up to around $67,000.

I like the DTS, as much as people dont like it, it does have a loyal following of die hards that still enjoy an old school style Cadillac.
