2005 Cobalt Coupe

Bottom of the line, automatic was the only option. From the nice folks at Alamo.

You've all heard it's a nice car, and I'm here to second that opinion. Quite impressive for the price. Cobalt cruised happily on Wyoming highways at 80+ mph, and still rewarded me with 34.8 mpg (as reported by the only driver info system I've ever seen on such a cheap car). And the 2.2L Ecotech was a joy - punch it, and the little 4 spun up to 6500 rpm with a smooth, happy sound. It actually sounded GOOD at that level, and I had no hesitation to use it to its maximum. I couldn't believe it was an American 4.

Build quality was beyond reproach, except for a drumming sound in the rear package shelf that I fixed with a rolled up paper napkin wedged between the shelf and the rear window. Oh, and I had to finger tighten the radio antenna, which made a distinctive noise over road ruts. OK, so these things we're totally acceptable, if only because they were so easy to fix. Factory could easily have caught them.

500 miles later, all I could wonder was: what are they going to do to differentiate Cadillacs in the future? Seriously: this $12K car (at Employee Discount Pricing) had so much inherent goodness built into it - fast, solid, tight, quiet, punchy, comfortable - that the gap between it and Caddys costing 5x as much is getting mighty narrow. This is a big challenge for the future of the auto business, I say.

Re: 2005 Cobalt Coupe

Nice little review, AMcA. I have seen the Cobalt before at the dealer. Very nice looking, youthful and high quality. Chevy did a good job on it.

Re: 2005 Cobalt Coupe

Not a bad review, the Ecotec has been nice in any car Ive driven that had it. No need for a v6, no weird sounds, and great MPG
