Talking 2005 Canyon - Worlds better than S10

I had the chance to sit in a 2005 Canyon SLE crew cab. First time I really sat in one.

Pros:

-Very nice dashboard grain
-Thick steering wheel (leather on this model)
-GM's usual top-notch ergonomics
-Seats

Cons:

-Dash rock hard
-Flimsy lower center stack
-Cupholders could be deeper
-Door grab handles don't go all the way through
-Odd material on door panel (mouse furr)

I like the new seat fabric GM is using, felt much better than cheap cloth.

Overall it wasn't as bad as most of you build it up to be.

the canyon may be better than the sonoma, but it's still a big pile of crap. It feels tight and uncomfortable to sit in, there's no V6 or I6 and the 4-cylinder is pointless. I'm surprised people actually buy this truck, frankly, the only good domestic compact pickup is the Dakota, ranger and colorado aren't really that impressive.

How is the 4-cylinder pointless?

it's got no power, I'd be afraid to do any towing with it, the I5 gives you more power, better towing and gas mileage isn't that bad.

Simple solution, if you plan on towing, get the 5-banger.

Re: 2005 Canyon - Worlds better than S10

but why don't they offer a V6, the Toyota has a lot more power, better interior etc. The Colorado needs the I6, at least to compete better with Dodge and Toyota.

I'm going to have to agree with IAMCANADIAN. Being better the previous generation is a very small accomplishment. And even then, the old gen did some things better (towing).

There is no compelling reason to pick the Colorado or Canyon over the Dakota, Tacoma, or Frontier. They just don't stand out in any area in which a truck needs to stand out.

There's no compelling reason to choose any domestic over the Tacoma - Dakota included. GM has a lock on the compact truck market - while the rest have gone midsize - I'd continue the focus on this size and focus on fuel efficiency, avail V6 power (I6) and raise the int quality above that of a Kia.

No one is happy about the lack of V6 availability, especially in the H3 platform mate. Some have said they are fixing this. Lets hope so.

A friend rented a Colorado the other day which had Canyon badges on the doors. This is pure anecdotal and means nothing.

It seems GM is prone to that sort of inanity.

I saw a standard Yukon with a Yukon XL badge--on the driver's side only.

I also saw a Chevrolet Silhouette on a dealer's lot.

That reminds me a long time ago I had to drive a made in Venezuela 82 Ford Cougar (just a 82 Mercury Cougar with Ford badges) which seat belt's bucles wouldn't match . . . :p

Now back to topic . . .

Re: 2005 Canyon - Worlds better than S10

The colorado is definitely much better than the S-10, for sure. The 4-cylinder is there for CAFE, and at least it has decent power, and if I remember right, does not have a huge towing rating difference from the 5-cylinder. It does need an option for better power, be it the inline 6 or either the 4.8/5.3 V8....a DOD 5.3 would probably equal the inline 5 on MPG.

5.3 V8 with DoD, but not before 2008 unfortunately. Next year (2007), all the Atlas' get about a .2L increase, so there should be a little hp and torque relief there.

Some are saying the I6 is going to be shoehorned in. V8s carry a stereotype, positive in some regards, negative in others. I stand by saying whoever designed the thing so I6 would not fit should be shown the door. The H3 is constantly dinged for it.

The only place the I-6 is going for the next 3-4 years is in the mid-size SUVs, right where it's at now. No Colorado/Canyon, no H3, no GMT900s.
