WTB: daily driver/winter beater

OK ... it is already mid-August, so I'm "stepping up" the search for a winter beater/daily driver/road trip car.... I love driving my '87 MC LS daily, but come this winter, I'd prefer to keep it out of the elements to keep it nice as it is. The '87 MC LS has done beautifully since I first drove it in the winter (2003/2004), after I bought it July 2003, with no problems and no driveability issues. So, it'll be hard to put it away for the winter, but if I want to keep it nice, I kinda have to....

If I stick with "winter beater" only or combine "road trip warrier" to that ... these are what I am most-interested in...(and, of course, what I prefer to be driving, anyway)....

1986-1988 Monte Carlo LS
1987-1988 Monte Carlo SS
1987 Cutlass Supreme
1987 El Camino
1983ish Malibu
2006-7 Dodge Charger (inferno red ... or white)
2008 G8 (these won't be available soon enough)
1996ish Ford Thunderbird
1996ish-present Ford Crown Victoria

Or, if I have to "settle" (i.e. can't find any of the above in time), I'd consider these FWDs (I know ... gasp)...

2004 Chevy Classic (or same vintage Cutlass)
1996ish Riviera
06 mc (white or red jewel tintcoat only)
06 impala (white or red jewel tintcoat only)
2007 Cobalt

Over the course of the last month, I have done some online and local searches ... went to look at a few ... but, thus far, haven't found what I want.... Course, I had (and still have, in some ways) plenty of time to find what I want, but time is getting limited.... I have inquiries into a few dealerships about some cars on the lots...so, we'll see.

If you have other suggestions or know of someone or a dealership selling what I want, please let me know! TIA!

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

I'm in the same boat, as I intend to keep the Roadmaster garaged when there is snow on the ground...I have a good lead on something...but I want a small FWD, this is a GMC 2WD full size pickup! I could always add a locker in the rear end so with 2nd gear start I could get through the snow!

He he ... I've thought about pickups, but not so sure I want to go that route....

Do you have anything in particular in the small FWD market you want?

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

You should look for the 80s MC SS or a newer Charger for RWD. If you have to get FWD I would look at the Impala or Monte Carlo.

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

Although I have had winter beaters for years... (the last being a 2005 town and country minivan) I believe NOT having one is the smartest move.

I got rid of it and I'm saving a ton of money and my Z06 is no worse for wear.

I'd recommend just using the car you presently own for everyday..

That said if your not into doing that then the last generation Buick Rivera is a cool ride with front wheel drive and a supercharger..

I like that vehicle and its inexpensive.

Loads of pickups around if RWD is a must...cheap too if you aren't fussy about the sheetmetal condition...

For me I prefer FWD or 4WD in snowy conditions...that's just me.

I'd like to find a 88-94 Cavalier, or maybe an A-body from that time frame as well...

I only wish I would have kept my brother's old 96 Sunfire that I sold a year ago...I had it "just right" despite the high mileage...I see it every day as i travel to work!

MEDIOCRITY: It takes a lot less time, and most people won't notice the difference until it's too late.

Last October I did...the transmission was starting to "slip" a little (@172k miles) and I was worried that a failure was heading soon, so I sold it! The people I sold it to are still driving it, I did tell them of a slippage between 2nd & 3rd gear and they didn't seem fazed...

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

as long as you wash it consistently after it snows, i dont see a huge problem with driving around in your current car- esp if its garaged. youll get sand and salt on it, but give it a good wash and it should be fine, no?

IMO, no...maybe some of the late model units, but not the older rigs like knightfan & I have...

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

I have an 89 Mercury Tracer if anyone is interested. It has 177,00 miles, but it still runs great. I can get 40 mpg on highway and avergae 30+ in city, does fall to maybe 28 or 29 in the winter is you push it hard. Some work needed, but nothing to major and I am willing to do some of it if the price is right. Getting a new car this fall, hopefully by Thanksgiving and am willing to part with this as soon as I get the new one.

I've been doing that since 2003. I'd like to keep my '87 MC LS in as good as shape as possible. Still has very MINOR rust ONLY, even after being in winters since 2003. I don't know if I want to press my luck any further, though...especially since, unfortunately, my daily driver is not garaged ... my older 4 MCs (sunny day only cars) are.....

And, GMC ... I have thought about trucks ... but, still not convinced I'd be happy with a pickup....ya never know, though, I suppose .

Re: WTB: daily driver/winter beater

I can offer up a 1997 Jimmy SLT. Push button 4x4, leather, lots of goodies including side bars and tow pkg. 165,000 miles but runs good. Lots of new stuff, water pump, thermostat, belts, tires and brake pads. I am putting new O2 sensors in this weekend.

Anyways, was going to clean it up and stick a for sale sign in it this weekend. $2,750 to a good home.

I am going to be moving to a 4 door sedan. Second little one on the way (March), so I want something more current (with the safety latches - currently got one car seat in the center with the lap belt). Looks like the new Camaro may get pushed back two or three years.....

Well ... that'd be a different story, indeedy .

Actually ... spotted an '87 El Camino at a Chevy dealership a few towns away. Might go take a peak at it this weekend, though, they may be asking a bit too much....we'll see .
