Unhappy Astra MPG

Auto
24/30
Manual
24/32

I was told this at the Ride & Drive... I'm not terribly excited about it considering I do better in my 'Balt with the 2.2 and the Astra is 1.8 liters. I will officially drive the car this Friday.

Well I expects you'll give us a full review of the car when take out for a test run. MPG could be much better I agree but whose to say these numbers are accurrate.

Don't the other Ecotecs do better than advertised?

Re: Astra MPG

I think it would be pretty easy to beat those numbers. My 2.0T Ecotec can easily get 33mpg on the highway and the last trip I actually managed 35. My 9-3 is a much larger car than the astra, but I also have the Turbo assist..so that might be why.

Re: Astra MPG

I dont trust the ratings anyways. My current car is rated the same as that and I get 38 highway going 80.

I do agree I would expect the ratings to be higher than that with a 1.8L. We will see once the actual test are done, those are probably just GM estimates, although they are usually pretty close.

Re: Astra MPG

From what I understand those are EPA estimates.

I'll have much much more Friday. Anyone want to lend me a camera?

Re: Astra MPG

Using the adjusted numbers, my 2002 Accord (4 cylinder, manual) is rated at 22/29. I get around 28/32. So I beat it by around 20%.

Re: Astra MPG

Yep I beat the EPA ratings too. It is actually pretty common with the ecotecs to do this. I have no idea why though. My '03 Sunfire, '04 Ion and '06 Ion all beat the EPA numbers all the time. Here's a link to some other GMIers that also claim the same.

Re: Astra MPG

Those numbers are pretty disappointing, considering that the new numbers on the 1.7L Civic put it at 31/39. How realistic is that? Who knows. But anybody that is comparing those two cars and cares about fuel economy will have a hard time accepting the Astra's lower estimates.

As far as Ecotec's getting better mileage, again, who knows. It seems a lot of people on the this board and at Saturnfans claim to close to 40 mpg out of their IONs. I have a 2.2 ION, and have never gotten better than 34 on the highway. My driving keeps me in the city 99% of the time, and I usually average 20 mpg per tank. For reference, the new numbers put my car at 21/29 - so I'm pretty close on city, not so close on the highway. It's a crapshoot anyway, and depends a lot on how a person drives the car.

Still, these numbers haven't killed my enthusiasm for the Astra. I plan on buying one next summer.

Yeah driving habits contribute alot to mpg's. I was able to get 42 mpg's out of my Ion on an all highway trip at 5-6000 ft in altitude at 75 mph. Also the 34 you report is higher than the 29 you said it is rated at you know. Your low altitude and high humidity could be lowering your mpg's also. More air means more fuel and more wind resistance. Also your engine is designed to adjust to your typical driving habits. So, if your driving mostly city it will adjust for low rpm tq. and power for stop and go traffic. This means advancing your timing and increasing fuel ratios at lower rpms. If you do alot of highway it will adjust for a lean mixture at a steady midrange rpm. If you do a mix it will do a mix. I have also noticed in my Ion if I drive it hard every once in a while it actually gets better mileage afterwards. But, thats just me.

P.S this is the post I used to reach the 500 post milestone.

Re: Astra MPG

2008 Cobalt 2.2 Manual: 24/33
Automatic: 22/31

One of the first driving impressions I read said that RPM at 75-80 (can't remember exactly) were around 4k - extremely high for a GM car. On the highway that will definitely eat into any gains made by the smaller 1.8L vs. the Cobalt's 2.2L. I hope the Astra is VERY responsive on the highway, because there's no reason to have the RPMs that high otherwise. Our 1.8L automatic Vibe runs 3000 RPM at 80 mph. It won't accelerate much without downshifting, but it pulls highs suprisingly well without downshifting.

Re: Astra MPG

Don't forget EPA ratings all dropped significantly this year due to new methods of testing.

I would guess at the redesign in a few years at the earliest, I would love on though. We can blame it all on California.
