Re: Your ideal Chevy Lineup...

An Introduction

This ideal line up is based on a few assumptions:
First assumption, GM would eventually trim its car/CUV model line (selling/killing Pontiac and Saturn) which would free up a place for a full-size RWD Chevy sedan (Zeta II Impala), mid-size RWD coupe (Alpha Chevelle), and a smaller mid-size RWD roadster (Alpha Stingray).
Second assumption, GM could streamline full-size truck/SUV model line, taken for the most part from the ideas expressed here: GMC Should Die… And be Reborn. Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche become GMC exclusive models, along with full-size vans and commercial products. Leaving Chevy with Equinox, Traverse, Colorado, and low-end Silverado models.
Finally, concerning the Chevelle, it would share wheelbase size with the Malibu and ride on Alpha whereas Malibu would ride on Epsilon II (similar to the duality postulated between a future Impala and Caprice, it makes more sense to me to do this on a midsize platform, rather than fullsize). Chevelle would be coupe only and have sportier styling, with the powertrains and platform to back it up. Malibu would be largely unchanged, just some styling changes to bring it slightly more in line with Chevelle.

Note: If I screwed up with matching transmissions to vehicles (based on engine size and/or platform) feel free to let me know, so I can fix it.

Re: Your ideal Chevy Lineup...

why a weak-ass LU3: Vortec 4.3L V8 200 hp/265 ft-lbs?
GM has V6s and I6s that make far more power.

Just wondering...

I admit, I did kind of rush on the trucks (I'm more of a car guy). How's the smallblock diesel do for ya? From what little I understand, the torque curves and torque output (in general) of diesels make them far better suited to towing and heavy payloads? Isn't that kind of the whole point with a work truck?

Re: Your ideal Chevy Lineup...

Here's our "Final" Chevrolet lineup:

Keep in mind this is the culmination of a "backtrack" move, where we revamped GM's lineup beginning in the mid-1990s, so there are many familiar Chevy products that simply would have never existed.

Under our scheme, GMC would move to Chevrolet showrooms, and Corvette would spun off as an independent brand. There'd be a lineup of "Heritage" models, which would be a separate franchise, offered free to dealers giving up Olds and Pontiac franchises, but would have to be purchased by others. The "Heritage-Corvette" lineup could be sold by the same dealer, but would require a separate showroom and sales department, though service could remain with the original dealer.

I haven't sorted out the engine palettes yet, so I'll note the product, its platform, assembly plant, and brief description for models we've "invented". Note I've "borrowed" several model names from other GM products as fillips, since I don't have the patience to pore through possible model names. Also note that over the years involved in the scheme, we've kept running nearly all of GM's shuttered assembly plants (part of our scheme involved keeping as many Americans as possible with jobs).

Chevrolet Beat
Gamma platform
Assembled in Brazil and/or India

Chevrolet Metro & Aveo
Gamma platform
Assembled at Ramos Arizpe
Metro is the hatchback; Aveo is the sedan

Chevrolet Cavalier
Delta platform
Assembled at Lordstown and Ste. Therese
Cobalt and Cruze would have kept Cavvy name

Chevrolet Monza
Delta platform
Assembled at Ste. Therese
Compact coupe battles Scion tC, Civic Coupe...

Chevrolet Volt
Delta platform
Assembled at Lordstown

Chevrolet Malibu
Epsilon platform
Assembled at Lansing Delta Township

Chevrolet Laguna
Epsilon platform
Assembled at Lansing Delta Township
Malibu-derived coupe to battle Accord, Altima coupes

Chevrolet Lumina
Epsilon platform (widened)
Assembled at Fairfax, Kansas
W-body Impala would have been a "Lumina"; this is its replacement

Chevrolet Acadia
Lambda platform
Assembled at Flint, Michigan (frmrly "Buick City")
GM's third-time's-the-charm Minivan hit

Chevrolet Signal
Gamma platform
Assembled at Moraine, Ohio
Baby Crossover based on G-PIX concept

Chevrolet Captiva
Theta platform
Assembled at Ingersoll, Ontario and Baltimore, Maryland

Chevrolet Traverse
Theta platform (widened)
Assembled at Ingersoll, Ontario
Midsize Crossover slots between Gamma and Lambda models

Chevrolet Tahoe
Lambda platform
Assembled at Flint, Michigan and Wentzville, Missouri
Tahoe moves to Lambda in '07

Chevrolet Recon
GMT350 platform
Assembled at Ypsilanti, Michigan
Wrangler-fighting Hummer HX concept goes to Chevy

Chevrolet Montana
Theta platform
Assembled at Linden, New Jersey
Mini-Avalanche

Chevrolet Cheyenne
Lambda platform
Assembled at Flint, Michigan
Basically a unibody Avalanche

Chevrolet Silverado
GMT900 platform
Assembled at Fort Wayne, Oshawa, and Pontiac
Half-ton only aimed at leisure/light-duty buyer; maybe has sportier styling than current dullard

"Heritage" Line

Chevrolet Cruze
Delta platform
Assembled at Framingham, Mass.
The HHR; I nicked the name from Holden cuz I thought it sounded better than "HHR"

Chevrolet Nomad & Bel Air
Delta platform
Assembled at Framingham, Mass.
Small wagon inspired by Kappa Nomad concept; Bel Air is 4-seat "roadster" to compete with VW Eos

Chevrolet Chevelle
Alpha platform
Assembled at Oshawa, Ontario
GM's long-awaited compact RWD sedan; Styled by Holden, and exported to Oz as the Torana, it's about the size of the outgoing Mazda6 or Subaru Legacy, that is, straddling the compact/midsize segments

Chevrolet Impala
Zeta platform
Assembled at Orion, Michigan
Big, sporty fastback sedan

Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Zeta platform
Assembled at Orion, Michigan
No cheezy, discoball 70s retro cues; this is a modern-day iteration of late 60s Chevelles

Chevrolet Caprice
Zeta platform
Holden-sourced big sedan familiar to Arabian GM buyers!

Chevrolet Camaro
Alpha platform
Assembled at Oshawa, Ontario
Built on lighter Alpha platform for optimum performance

Chevrolet LUV
Gamma platform
Assembled at Moraine, Ohio
Brazilian-designed, US-built minitrucklet derived from Signal baby crossover

Chevrolet El Camino
Zeta platform
Holden ship us some of their Utes

Chevrolet Blazer
GMT355 platform
Assembled at Shreveport, Louisiana
No Hummer brand in this scheme, so Hummer designs go elsewhere; This is the H3, but also available as sportier SWB 2-door variant

Corvette Solstice
Kappa platform
Assembled at Lansing Craft Centre
Yep, I've given the Solstice to 'vette. Why not? It looks like a baby 'vette! Perfect entry-level model for the brand

Corvette Anthem
Sigma platform
Assembled at Orion, Michigan
Production version of stunning Chevy SS concept

Corvette Stingray
Xi (Y-body) platform
Assembled at Bowling Green
The classic 'vette

Corvette Cien
Mu platform
Assembled at Bowling Green
GM get serious, and take its new Corvette brand to its heights with this world-class mid-engined model.

GMC line:

GMC Suburban & Suburban XL
GMT900 platform
Assembled at Arlington and Janesville
Current Tahoe & Suburban, but with GMC grille in lieu of Chevy's

GMC Denali & Denali XL
GMT900 platform
Assembled at Arlington
Current Yukon & Yukon XL Denalis

GMC Denali XT
GMT900 platform
Assembled at Arlington
Current Avalanche with Yukon Denali front clip

GMC Colorado
GMT355 platform
Assembled at Shreveport
Would have gone to GMC from day one, with Chevy getting unibody Montana

GMC Sierra
GMT900 platform
Assembled at Fort Wayne, Oshawa Truck, and Pontiac
Since it's sold alongside the half-ton-only Silvy in showrooms, the Sierra becomes the heavier-duty model; GM effectively ape Ford's practice of splitting the F150 and F-Super Duty into two separate truck lines

GMC Movano
Tau platform
Assembled at Flint Truck Assembly
New global large van replaces ancient GMT600s and European Renault-sourced models; Flint would export them globally

The lineup's not so huge split between two sales showrooms. The regular Chevy line is roughly the number of models Toyota-Scion offer, and the "Heritage-Corvette" lineup, is roughly the size of an Olds-Pontiac lineup. Plus the five Suburban-Denali models are effectively just variations of a single vehicle. Of course the coupé derivatives like the Laguna and Monza could be folded respectively into the Malibu and Cavalier lineups. Oh and I believe GM should have kept the Cavvy name and built its reputation up, rather than this switch from Cobalt to Cruze to heavenknowswhat.

As for Corvette... it's sort of GM's Porsche. Solstice=Cayman, Anthem=Panamera, Stingray=classic iconoclast model...

Hey it's just an idea!

So, help me understand...would Saturn and Pontiac fold into this lineup, or would they still exist separately in your ideal GM?

I completely agree, Chevy should have kept (and rebuilt equity in) the Cavalier name.

Re: Your ideal Chevy Lineup...

My "ideal" lineup is not very farfetched. I try to be realistic. Every platform/car model would have to lose 75-100lbs--when the generation is updated or replaced.

Epsilons and Zetas are pretty porky cars. I don't think 75-100lbs would be too much to lose and not cost too much.

DI across the board and 6 speeds both autos and manuals.

Chevrolet Aveo FWD
1.6L DI VVT 16 valve 125hp
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto

Chevrolet Cruze FWD
1.4L DI VVT 16 valve Turbo 150hp
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto

SS model 2.2L Turbo 265hp 4dr and 2dr
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto

Chevrolet Malibu FWD-built on Epsilon 2
2.4L DI 16 valve 200hp
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto

Hybrid--2 mode
2.4L DI 16 valve with electric motor
225hp
6 speed auto

2.2L Turbo 265hp
6 speed auto

SS model 290hp 3.6L DI V6
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto

Impala built on Zeta platform
300hp 3.6L DI V6
6 speed auto

2.9L V6 TDI
250hp/400lbs-ft
6 speed auto

SS 430hp 6.2L
6 speed auto

Camaro
315hp 3.8L HF V6
6 speed manual/ 6 speed auto
