If any automaker is going to make a new large family sedan, it should be a large family sedan - not necessarily any bigger on the outside than the current Impala, Avalon, Lucerne, and so forth, but efficiently packaged so that it has tons of interior space.
Thats all that is important, the interior dimensions.

Re: What do you want in the next Impala

RWD, AWD optional, lots of interior space, maximized fuel economy, optional performance trim with V8. Original, American styling would be nice too.

Chevrolet should have at least one RWD sedan, and it should be their historical flagship. And I doubt RWD would put off families from buying it.

Re: What do you want in the next Impala

I want something that could be both Luxurious, and Sporty.

I was hoping that it would go RWD and compete with 300 and Charger.

Needs Sharp and Agile styling, borrow a bit from Caddy.

What I want in the next Impala 60% Chevy, 40% Caddy.

Make this car that is truly different from Malibu.

However I did like that Impala computer rendering that was in Motor Trend a year (two years, maybe?) ago.

That would be perfect.

And it should be tested on the Nurburging like the HHR SS, Camaro, ZR1, etc.

I hope not, that thing looks like a 300 ripoff. I agree with the powerful engine however, but offer AWD on it.

Re: What do you want in the next Impala

I'd like to see rear wheel drive, loads of interior room, the DI 3.6L standard with an optional 350 horsepower V8.

Pretty much like the Dodge Charger, except not as cheap looking and a little softer around the corners.

The nice thing about front wheel drive sedans is that people don't expect them to be driven hard. So the manufacturer doesn't need to give it a super solid chassis. They can give it a pretty soft suspension. The wheels don't need to be particularly large, either. Most buyers opt for the 4-cylinder or weaker V6 engine option, and even the more powerful options are generally not that impressive. That keeps the engine and transmission relatively light.

If you make a rear wheel drive with a normal chassis, a soft suspension, just under medium size wheels, and two relatively tame engine choices, the car can be just as light as any FWD competitor. And it won't drive much differently.

Can RWD be light? Absolutely. But once you add the chassis, suspension, wheels, transmission, and engine you need for a car RWD fans want to buy it gets very heavy very quickly.

That's why the no-options Pontiac G8 with its aluminum block 3.6 liter V6 is 230 pounds heavier than a longer and taller fully loaded Impala LTZ V6 with its iron block 3.9 liter V6: the Zeta platform has far more "sport" built into it than the Impala's W-body.
It sounds crazy but GM has the technology to do it. G8 with the 3.6 5 speed auto gets 25mpg. Add DI and let's say now it's 27mpg. Change the auto to a 6 speed manual with a lower gear ratio and there is 29mpg. Add the two mode hybrid system and now we're talking 36mpg+ and that's not mentioning HCI if GM ever gets that on the market.

Even more things could be done. More alluminum and carbon fiber ala hood, truck, roof, panels ect.

I know all of this would be expensive but the point is GM has the technology to do it.

But I think the point is that it would be expensive.

A dual mode G8 SIDI V6 model with some added aluminum and carbon fiber would probably cost more than $40,000. That would be an awesome car, but most people could not afford it.

Re: What do you want in the next Impala

Leave it FWD, make the steering better (no more junky ISS problems), and give it a little sportier styling.. Please don't lower the darn roof.. Don't listen to the people who think it's cool to drive in a bathtub. Part of the charm of the Impala is having a sporty car with plenty of comfort and headroom.

Except you fail to realize that not everyone wants a manual. They can do all these other things, but then the price will go up and many people won't buy it.

Re: What do you want in the next Impala

I currently have a new base model Impala has a loaner while my car is in the body shop. I also had a fully loaded 2000 Impala.

I really liked the styling of the previous generation Impala over the current Impala. I liked it because it was sort of bold and edgy and when I see them now I still think the styling looks fresh.

One thing I don't like about the new Impala is the cup holders. They should put some real cup holders in the front instead of what is in there now. The driver side is too big for a coffee, the cup sloshes from side to side and makes a mess. The passenger side one is smaller and is too small for a large drink container. I don't think they have cup holders in the rear but I haven't checked.

Also, a fold down rear centre arm rest should be brought back. I didn't check to see if the base model has that but I'm assuming it doesn't. I don't know if higher end models have it but I know my 2000 did. Also, build in a large pass through for skis and snowboards. I'm from the great white north and it's nice to have a vehicle that can take 4 people and their gear to the mountains for the day. I don't like having a roof rack and would prefer to store the boards inside.

Also, a nice set of xenon headlamps would be a nice touch.
