Replacement Key starts car but won't unlock it.

My mother recently lost the keys to my 2006 Malibu Maxx. Went to a local dealership and had them cut a new one. The car was unlocked at my moms house, so I got in and coded the key then cranked it up. I then drove to work and locked the car. When I tried to leave, the key would not unlock the door. The dealer said that it can't be the key causing the problem. What do I do.

Have you been locking the car with the key or with the remote?

Do you have any of the original keys, and do they unlock the door?

If yes, then its not the door/door-lock, its the new key.

I'm pretty sure, some of the key cuts on the key are for the door lock and others are for the ignition. This is done, so that one key unlocks the doors and starts the car, and if you replace the ignition switch, they just re-cut the key cuts on the new key for the door, and you don't have to replace the door & trunk cylinder locks. I know this is how Ford does it (or use to when I worked there).

    Good Luck!

Is there only ONE exterior lock?
Does it work in the trunk lock?
Has the ignition lock been replaced ?

    Return to dealer.................

If the old key would unlock the door, then there's something wrong with the new key.

If you always unlocked the door with a keyless remote, someone has changed out the door lock cylinder...

    2007 Impala. (we bought new).
I left the remote in the car- and only took key with me. (to carry the least on my person).
we went back to car- put the key in- would not open the door. tried and tried.
We were on the 4th floor of a parking structure (universal city).
We had spotty cell signal in the middle of the parking structure- as the call dropped once-
and was spotty on the 2nd.... But ONSTAR was able to unlock car.
Key started car- but wont open door.
We get home- and I try the other key- this key opens door and starts car.
the other key just wont open the door....
I compared them side by side and they look identical....

Still have not figured out why one key opens the door and the other doesn't.
maybe one is more worn than the other?
But these are the keys that came with the new car...
