Very cool, I wonder more of these will start popping up. I when I went to NYC for the NY Auto Show earlier this year there were a ton of Altima Hybrid police cars.

I see them almost everyday! It's only used for traffic enforcement, as is the Prius. But, yes, I think that the Volt looks really good in its NYPD uniform.

"What is left unsaid in all this is the fact that conventional cars with a tank full of petrol are far greater fire hazards than electric cars will ever be. Some 185,000 vehicles catch fire in America each year, with no fewer than 285 people dying as a consequence. But, then, people have been living with the hazard of petrol for over a century. Irrationally, electric-vehicle fires are perceived as somehow more worrisome simply because they are new." - The Economist

Yes, the NYPD uses both Altima Hybrid and the Fusion Hybrid as patrol cars. I always found it kind of odd that they use those two hybrids for patrol vehicles, but the Prius (which is the first hybrid of their fleet) was only delegated to Traffic Enforcement.
The cool thing about the NYPD is that their fleet consists of almost every vehicle imaginable. I have quite the collection of pictures that I have taken over the past couple of years of their fleet. Here is an interesting one taken at a subway station:

They painted all the parts that should have been painted on the Volt in the first place and it makes it look so much better.

^Amen to that. I hate the look of that blacked out area on the doors. It looks so cheap. It makes it look like a second gen Lumina sedan to me - not good.
Buy American. Buy Ford. So say we all!

These vehicles aren't up for patrol use but they have their place in a municipal fleet for support services such as administrative employees, parking and code enforcement, training transportation, and animal control. The current Impala is fuel efficient and cheap but old, and the new Caprice is roomy and a great performer but foreign built. I'd go with next year's AWD Charger or an AWD PI Utility (Explorer) for road Officers.
