WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. is recalling about 300,000 Chevrolet HHR sport utility vehicles in the United States to fix a storage bin door that failed to remain closed during government testing.

Big deal! Did they notice if the fendors crushed, the windshield broke, and the headlights didn't work anymore

While I do see the issue with the storage compartment opening should this really be catagorized as a full-fledged recall I mean there are other cars out there with upper dash based compartments that aren't covered at all--should they all be recalled?

This is stupid I mean what are the chances of a persons head hitting that storage compartment?

I agree. This is under FMVSS201L. The rule originally was designed for the actual glove box. In an accident, they didn't want the glove box to open and possible crush your knees or something. Now it applies to anything on the IP that can open. IE: ashtray, storage tray, whatever. I personally worked on this fix, and seeing what it took to come up with a fix, you wonder why these companies are failing.

But on the other hand, this is a very old rule and it should have been dealt with from the beginning in the math modeling stages. You will most likely see other GM vehicles with this particular storage bin come up for recall because we're already testing them (and failing in house) before they fail at NHTSA.

PS. Why wouldn't this be put in the RECALLS part of the forums? This is the second one I've posted that didn't go to the recalls forum. Oh well.
