Chevy C1500 Silverado dosent have 4 disc brakes

I'm actually shopping for a truck. What I found out is that the 1500 Silverado dosent have 4 disc brakes. It has drums in the rear. I was surprised because the competiton has 4 standard disc brakes. The security for my family is important and disc brakes has better performance than drum. The other thing that I found out is that XFE 1500 silverado which makes better gas mileage and cost around $2.000 more. Your actually paying 2000 more just for a smaller axle ratio.

    100% agree with Sonoma.

GM had tried the 4 wheel discs before going back to the rear drums.

Check the truck stopping distance comparisions. I think you'll be surprised.

Semi trucks use drums, they seem to work ok.

I had a '99 Sierra with 4-wheel discs and now I own an '05 Silverado with rear drums. The drum setup in the rear is much better than the LD discs were. If you really want 4-wheel discs the Max Trailering Package adds HD rear discs along with the HD rear axle.

The XFE adds the 5.3L Flex Fuel/6-Speed Automatic, Trailering Equipment, Locking Rear Differential, Tonneau Cover and Alloy Wheels to the Silverado 1LT at a cost of $1,760. If you add the XFE's standard equipment to the 1LT the difference is $3 more for the XFE, which I guess covers the little "XFE" badge.

I used to feel the same way but the stopping comparison tests show it stops perfectly fine with rear drums

Re: Chevy C1500 Silverado dosent have 4 disc brakes

I had a 1977 GMC that had four wheel disk brakes. They still sucked and were very dangerous- no power brakes or ABS.

My 2007 Silverado has drum brakes out back just like the 1995 K1500 model that we used to have.

In fact, in 1999, the new GMT800 trucks had four wheel disk brakes that had nothing but problems! They reverted back to larger diameter front disk and rear drums with four wheel ABS in 2005.

The wheel diameters are so large nowadays that they can put some pretty hefty brakes in there! The new rear drum front disk setup is much better in both stopping power and durability.

A few years back GM changed from discs to drums in the back and the stopping distances either stayed the same or improved... I forget exactly... but it's not necessarily a big deal. Like others say try the truck out and see how the brakes work. If they work well it doesn't matter what system they use.

i've noticed that on the 2500 and 3500 models, they still use 4 wheel disc...but, they are dual piston calipers from what i recall and the rotors are much larger.

Re: Chevy C1500 Silverado dosent have 4 disc brakes

They did it to save money, plain and simple.............

A caliper, caliper bracket, set of pads and rotor cost about $70 (OE production cost)

A wheel cylinder, set of shoes & springs and a drum cost about $25 (OE production cost)

    600,000 trucks x $45 x 2 wheels per truck is about $54,000,000 per year.

Yes, they spun it to say the brakes were better performing, but some of the issues that made the drum brakes perform better had to do with the master cylinder and power brake booster, they needed to be changed no matter what.

In 1999, did GM say they were going to 4 wheel disc brakes because they were cheaper and had a decrease in performance!?

I got the drums in the back of my 2008 Sierra no noticeable performance increase or decrease, from my 2001 GMT800.
