Chevrolet Prizm is it good?

I found a 2001 Chevrolet Prizm with 110,799 miles for $800 I think it is a good deal what do you all think? The Prizm is a base model with A/C and an automatic transmission which are probably the only options it has.

$800 for anything that runs & drives OK is a good deal in my book....

I agree. Just remember, you get what you paid for. Don't expect it to be 100%. I would have a mechanic give it a look before you buy.

Re: Chevrolet Prizm is it good?

What's wrong with it? That seems rediculously low. As long as you aren't going to use it as an only car (without having it checked out first) than I say go for it. Most people that own Prisms and Corollas (they are the same thing) seem to love them.

Here's a thought that's slightly off-topic. Would Prism have been a better name for the Cobalt? Didn't the Prism already have a good image, where Cobalt was a brand new name? I was just thinking about it because the Cobalt sedan reminds me a lot of the Prism/Corolla.

In my opinion, anything would have been better than Cobalt. That's why I'm hoping like Hell the new global model doesn't carry that awful name. Seems GM revived the name of sorts (that or ripped off Lancia) for the Brazilian Prisma.

Shame GM never took the Cavalier seriously. Had they replaced it with something decent around 2000 or so, they could have hung on to a name with some equity. Cobalt doesn't mean squat to buyers. It really didn't matter what GM named it, it was going to be an also-ran. I suspect the the Cobalt is probably being bought by domestic lovers who likely would have bought a Cavalier back in the day. I hardly ever see Cobalts on the roads down here, and half of the ones I see have rental stickers on them. Given the "me too" image the Cobalt, it wouldn't matter one bit if GM choose a new name for its global replacement. Hopefully that model, whatever it's called, can build up name equity to match Corolla and Civic.

Re: Chevrolet Prizm is it good?

I have a friend with a 2000 corolla, and thinks it's okay. Though I would definatly have a mechanic look over it first. Not only is that generally a good idea, but $800 seems a little low even for a 6 year-old compact with few options, so there might be a serious problem(s) that the seller is chosing not to disclose. But if you can't find anything wrong with the car, I say go for it. You're probably not going to get anything better for $800

Maybe it was totaled/flooded in the past....

If it checks out ok....definately buy it.

I am happy to see I am not the only who is not a fan of the Cobalt name, though I must say Prism does not set my heart on my fire either... Only marginally better than Optra. All three sound "utilitarian" - good for a piece of laboratory equipment, but not a car that would evoke some emotions.

I think Cavalier was a very good name. Too bad GM ruined it...

That is a very good point! Make sure you check the title for Salvage!

If it's not hemorrhaging, drives well and has a clear title $800 ain't bad. Just carry your cell phone when driving it.

It is worth more in scrap metal. If it drive nice and you can handle any smells come out of the interior go for it.

Re: Chevrolet Prizm is it good?

I recently started working at a Chevrolet dealership and a customer decided not to pay the repair bill for her Prizm and gave up her car and if I pay the $800 repair bill I will own the Prizm.

Did they file for a Mechanic's Lien or did she give them the title? As long as you have a clear title I'd buy it.
