2016 the return of the Monte Carlo??

So I was talking with a close friend of mine who owns a few dealerships and he tells me that the rumors of the monte return are indeed true and it will be here as a 2016 model, he said it was pretty much all he knew beside the fact that it may be RWD. Any thoughts or insights?

Seems unlikely. The personal luxury coupe market is nowhere as big as it once was. If GM were to bring back a car in this market, I'd expect it to be a higher-margin Buick. And, there is still only sporadic rumours of a Buick coupe. I do think there is a desire to do a small RWD sports sedan/coupe like the Code 130. But, that is very far from the kind of mid-sized, personal lux coupe the Monte Carlo was for most of its life.

A new Camaro is coming in that time frame.

That appears to have been false:
    Autoblog

    That is a FWD car

I would be fine if the Monte Carlo name stays dead. With the current positioning of the Camaro, I don't see GM making a large coupe right now or anytime soon unless it is a new CTS Coupe that Chevy or Buick gets a sister of later on. If it is even RWD. A 2-door Impala would be the other option I see.

They could keep the Camaro line open in Oshawa to build Caprice PPV and a new Monte on old ZETA I suppose while Camaro moves to Alpha. Don't see that happening though.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

Wouldn't this hurt the Camaro V6? I don't think GM would do this. Buick or Cadillac version seems like it would make the most sense.

On first pass I'd say no, but.............If Buick does eventually get an Alpha based Riviera, I could easily see a Monte Carlo cousin positioned above the Camaro as an mid-sized premium Chevrolet.

    I personally don't think so.

    Coupes just don't sell anymore.

This is the Chicken & Egg problem: Outside of the three main pony cars and ultra-luxury cars, most manufacturers don't really offer "mainstream" coupes to the public currently. So how can there be low sales of coupes when the public can no longer buy them?!

I believe this comes down to lowering manufacturing cost. To avoid the added development/engineering/component cost of coupes, overall we're being force-fed sedans. Mark Reuss even admitted recently that GM has noticed that the younger market segment is having a surge of buying older rwd coupes, but "the market isn't there yet". This could just be a case of waiting 3-5 years until that market segment is older and able to afford new coupes.

Hopefully something is in the works

I think it is highly likely that we will see a Riviera, Monte Carlo ( or Impala SS), Grand National on the CTS size alpha platform. There is alrleady strong information that a GN is coming, the Riviera is also been shown in concept form a few times, and the rumors on a new SS are strong as well.
I think (hope) that GM has decided to move their mid-size cars to a more modern, alpha platform, leaving zeta behind and Omega for the larlest luxury sedans and coupes.
I can see it now: Motor Trend announces "GM re-invents the modern rwd coupe and sedan"!

Your friend may be confusing Monte Carlo with Camaro. Not surprising, as we transition out of the 5th gen Monte Camarlo...

Gently let your friend know that he is mistaken.
