Toyota U.S. June sales up 14.4 percent

DETROIT, July 3 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said U.S. vehicle sales rose 14.4 percent as demand for its passenger cars increased amid concern over fuel economy.

The world's No. 2 automaker said it sold 223,018 vehicles in the United States last month, compared with 194,875 vehicles a year earlier.

Toyota, expected by many analysts to surpass General Motors Corp. (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) as the world's largest automaker within a year, said . . .

Who the heck is buying all these things? It boggles my mind that each month that they post the same or better results than the month before. I mean I can see why people like owning Toyotas, but this growth is phenomenal!

just curious how is a 30 000 car increase over one year to 220000 lead analyst to believe Toyota will surpass GM next year if they still roughly 190000 cars behind in sales in N/A? Are Toyota's Worlds sales really that much better then GM's?

Yes. They pretty much own the Japanese car market where GM is virtually nonexistent. Remember Japan is the second largest market after the US. They are also No.1 in Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Phillippines and a host of other S and SE ASIAN countries. They are experiencing rapid growth in China as well although GM is still ahead by a good margin there. Add to the fact that GM is losing market share in its own turf against Toyota and it becomes pretty obvious why they will top GM within a few months to a year.

Based on YTD sales, much of Toyota and Honda's sales increases are coming from other imports like Nissan. The big 3 are loosing some car sales to Toyota, but it's not all coming from the Big 3.

GM's North American production YTD is up vs last year while Toyota's is down. Not so sure they are going to make any gains over GM this year. GM's June sales are up 16% over June, 2004. Last years increase of 41% makes for tough year over year comparisons.

Well that is quite close then. So a it is possible for Toyota to become number one in sales this year.

I thought GM sold ~9.1 million vehicles last year? Wasn't it their best year in 20+ years?

GM's 2005 worldwide sales were the strongest in over 25 years

General Motors sold over 9 million vehicles worldwide in 2005, surpassing that mark for only the second time in its history (the only other year that this happened was in 1978). The total of 9.17M vehicles provided a 2% bump from its 2004 numbers.

We must not leave out the fact that GM is no. 1 in China and continuing to grow there while Toyota is is a distant 4th. China may Keep GM on top and we still have some very important New releases yet to come in 2006 Aura, Outlook, Acadian, 900 Trucks, View Green Line and Aveo. 2006 is not over yet. Those new crossovers are going to be hot. it's a shame Enclave won't be ready in the fall too.

You have the wrong data for GM. Here is the correct number.

In 2005, 9.17 million GM cars and trucks were sold globally under the following brands: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall.
