Toyota set to overtake GM
Toyota May Become World's Biggest Automaker
Kyodo News - October 3, 2005 Motor Trend The Toyota group may become the biggest automaker in the world in 2006 thanks to brisk overseas sales, taking the position long held by General Motors Corp. of the United States, according to industry data made available Monday. Global production by Toyota Motor Corp. and its group companies may reach 9 million units in 2006, far above the 8.28 million projected for 2005 and comparable with GM's output. It will probably do it too. I'm more concerned about Toyota's success in this country... it just has to push a little more and work a little harder. In addition, I've read that demand in Japan has been very high for Lexus and some new Toyota models. |

Re: Toyota set to overtake GM in 2006
Same article states the following
"While GM is forecast to roll out 9.13 million vehicles in 2005, it will likely continue to face slower sales especially in the core North American market." Toyota projected '8.28 million' Last time I checked 9.13 is more than 8.28. This could be how Kool-Aid math works. The most important word in the title is 'may' |

Re: Toyota set to overtake GM in 2006
If articles like this appear on the ticker in the future I guess I'll have to find a new site for GM inside news. This is Toyota news and the guy who posted it is someone who has zero interest in GM. The Guy who posted this just likes to stir things up.I'm not going to put up with it anymore!

Re: Toyota set to overtake GM in 2006
Unfortunately, its no surprise to see this type of article, and I can understand this being posted on this site, it does relate to GM. GM may have to give up the title of "the biggest car company in the world," I just hope it is not permanent!

There's a difference between biggest and best.
Think about that...

It's an epic battle, like King Kong vs. Godzilla. Of course, Kong ended up winning (at least in the American version). Then he swam out to sea, I guess to return to his island. GM should stomp Toyota and swim back to its island.

Re: Toyota set to overtake GM in 2006
what's ironic is that toyota is selling well at home in japan and here in the US. goes to show how the japanese support their businesses, so they buy hometown toyotas in japan and we, buy toyotas here, when we should instead be buying GMs and fords. this is why toyota is succeding, because you could say, the japanese are more patriotic then we are.

Re: Toyota set to overtake GM in 2006
This is something that I used to care about, as a GM fan I always wanted them to be number 1, but you know what, you grow up and you understand things more. GM is going to eventually loose to Toyota. Toyota is a cash cow and is this juggernaut that cannot be stopped. However, I am reminded of history, and how it is bound to repeat itself. The worst thing that can ever happen to Toyota is for it to be number 1. They were sporting the underdog, small Japanese company who cares thing for so long. They used to be the rebel and GM was the big ugly corperate authority. Things have changed. Once you get to be a certain size you begin to have certain problems. Problems like GM and Ford are going through. Toyota is already starting to go through the same problems. Quality anyone? The same way you had generations of people not wanting to buy Chevy because thier dad owned a Chevy, you will get the some people not wanted to buy Toyota because thier dad had one. People are fickle, and in this country we root for the underdog, and we hate number one.
Good luck Toyota, your going to wear the shoe now. |
