Toyota Says Won't Bar GM, Renault-Nissan Union

Toyota Won't Bar GM, Renault-Nissan Union
By YURI KAGEYAMA (AP Business Writer)
From Associated Press
July 20, 2006 6:13 AM EDT

TOKYO - Toyota has no interest in blocking or joining the proposed tie-up between General Motors and the Renault-Nissan alliance, the Japanese automaker's president said Thursday.

The remarks from Toyota Motor Corp. President Katsuaki Watanabe come at a time when U.S. automaker General Motors Corp. is in talks about a possible partnership with an alliance between Renault SA of France and Nissan Motor Co.

Speculation has been growing that Toyota may be considering proposing to General Motors, the world's biggest automaker, an alternative option for a tie-up, perhaps to block Japanese rival Nissan's growth ambitions.

Watanabe said he didn't want to comment about talks among other automakers but denied Toyota was interested in joining the proposed mega-alliance.

"We are not thinking about participating," he told reporters at a Tokyo hotel when asked about whether Toyota may either join or block the talks among GM, Renault and Nissan.

Watanabe also bowed in apology at the news conference to express regrets - but not acknowledging wrongdoing - for causing troubles due to a criminal investigation linked to a recall case in 2004.

"I take this seriously and see it as a crisis," he said. "I want to apologize deeply for the troubles we have caused."

Prosecutors are investigating whether Toyota intentionally hid defects
that may have caused a head-on collision in 2004 that injured five people.

That's good news for GM. Apparently, Toyota has their own problems they need to address.

Gee, thanks. But let's see 'Dateline' go after this story. I haven't seen anything in the press about this. This is a major story.

I don't see Toyota being obnoxious about this. Frankly, I think they're hoping the merger goes through; it would mess up GM for years.

That line about Toyota being concerned about Nissan's hopes for major growth is down right laughable. Toyota has about as much to fear from Nissan as they do from Fiat.

Now that GM has Toyota's permission, they should just say no.

I dont' see how its arrogance on Toyota's part. The press and/or investors, I'm pretty sure, are the ones that first came up with the idea that Toyota may want to block the GM/Nissan move. Toyota is only responding to questions about it.

While I understand the crack-down on these boards on users who bash GM and use the forums to do nothing but praise toyota and Honda.....I wish these boards were more for news and comments about GM, not about simply bashing Toyota and Honda and the other competitors for any reason (and in many cases, for no reason) at all.

Are you like a jealous kind of guy who thinks whomever your ex-girlfriend is dating is a jerk no matter what he says or what he does? Because it seems you (and a lot of other people) have that kind of psycho attitude towards Toyota.

Now that's arrogance and ignorance. Good job.

Toyota would have just brought GM down with it. GM dosent need that extra burden. We're already on the rise.
