Toyota Says Diesel Prius Hybrids Possible

"TOKYO — Following Toyota's announcement that it will buy a 5.9 percent stake in Isuzu, the companies announced that they will pursue a joint diesel development strategy.

"Our belief is that the demand for diesel engines will increase globally," said Steven Curtis, media and investor relations national manager for Toyota. That marks a change for the company that has pioneered development of gasoline-electric hybrid powertrains in search of maximum efficiency.

In the Toyota/Isuzu partnership, Isuzu will take the lead in the areas of research and development for diesel engine production and for emissions-control technologies. Toyota, meanwhile, will concentrate on "environmental technologies, including basic engine and other technologies and other technologies related to alternative fuels," Curtis explained.

If that sounds like Toyota will integrate a diesel engine into its Synergy hybrid drivetrain, you are right, according to Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor North America."

Interesting. Diesel and Hybrid. They might be the first to mass-produce Diesel-Plugin-Hybrid! Wow....I would love to own a D-P-H vehicle!

Wasn't the Reflex a DuraTorq with a hybrid engine? And if IIRC the car had a working prototype.

GM only has itself to blame for cutting Isuzu loose.

Re: Toyota Says Diesel Prius Hybrids Possible

GM already knows what Isuzu knows, that's why Toyota wanted it to advance their own technology. Both the Reflex and the Meta 1 from Ford were diesel hybrids. Toyota is catching up, not putting themselves at the forefront.

I really don't understand why GM can't just pop a Diesel engine with their dual mode hybrid..

Full of sound and fury but signifying nothing.
I didn't happen to see a date attached to those wiley prognostications.
Nor specifications for the next 100 mpg family sedan.
Oh what? You've scaled your ambitions back to only 80 mpg?

Thanks for the 1980's Enginneering press release Toyota. You've got it down to an art.

Because it would make too much sense.

One area of criticism which GM seems to escape is in their market research. They seem to be clueless to trends. While the H2 movement is bold, it isn't all that practical yet.

GM didn't think anyone would buy a hybrid just as much as GM doesn't think anyone will buy a diesel.

Maybe they are? I hope so. Since the two-mode hybrid is just basically the transmission (not too much to do with the engine), all they have to do is modify the transmission to fit a diesel engine. This is in theory though...it's probably a bit harder to actually execute though.

Re: Toyota Says Diesel Prius Hybrids Possible

Because it would be too easy. Aren't the GM hybrid busses in Seattle basically a two-mode test bed?

Re: Toyota Says Diesel Prius Hybrids Possible

If Ford wants to do a bold move they should have by 09 a diesel hybrid ready for production
