Re: Toyota June Sales in Canada: Corolla new sales record

Bottom line is, across the board, GM is getting eaten alive. Even Chyrsler broke above even this month... CHRYSLER!!! Toyota, from the Yaris to the Rav4, are laughing at GM. The Civic, once production ramps up further, will be running circles around the Cobalt and G5, and I already see quite a few new Accords, especially compared to the new Malibu (though, new Camry and Sonata sightings have become rarer).

Fixed. Odd that I forgot CAMI. I was talking to my friend who is working on the new Theta's earlier today too.

Warren Buffet's share price has dropped too. Maybe we shouldn't listen to him either.

One man doesn't make reality.

So what if it is a recession...The same people who say it "absolutely" is a recession are the same people who keep trying to sell it by repeating what is supposed to be fact. Really doesn't matter. In the past so many years we have seen unbelieveable growth from a mature economy, low taxes, sky high real estate price growth...It is only natural there should be a correction. It is GOOD for the long-term viability of the economy! You have to look at the bigger picture.

Oh, by hhe way, check Warren Buffet's voter registration card. Yup, politics again.

The Dow Jones is "down" of their high...Ummm, what time comparison are you making. Man, some people are just so short-sighted. There are ups and downs in every market, but it is the LONG-TERM growth that matters, Any idiot can find one month down compared to the another month. However when you look at the 30-year growth, the DOW is UP. Much better than other investments. And when you look at it even in the last 5 years it is up...Still a better investment than government bonds or a savings account. The people getting burned are only the get-quick-rich types and people investing in bubble (real estate, anyone?) industries...Tough poopie for them. They deserrve to get burned.

Wow, if our economy is so crap in NA then it is definitely people like this who make ignorant, politically motivated statements. Jeesh!

No recession? The only people in the US who don't know that are the filthy rich and the traders so ssssh.
Yup, "everyone knows it"...So what is the point of repeating it if "everyone" does? Make you feel better? Funny how the whole recession thing came about, oh, during an election year...

Oh, well, the reality is us Canadians live off the backs of Americans anyway. 92% of all our exports go to the U.S. No U.S. economy, no jobs, taxes, or crappy health care...We should really hope the U.S. doesn't slide into a deep recession because we will be screwed. Heck, the whole world will be since pretty much every country is dependent on U.S. wealth.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that most people on this forum as less than 30 years old. Kinda hard to make sound investments before you are born.

And I'm betting that GM, Ford, and Chrysler will have a difficult time explaining to the investment community that it has to wait 30 years to see how well the automaker's plans to address high fuel prices turn out.

(TORONTO) – A broad selection of fuel-efficient vehicles, including Canada’s best offering of gasoline-electric hybrids, has powered Toyota Canada Inc. to a record June sales performance. TCI sold 22,428 Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks in June, up 8.8 per cent from June 2007, and leading to record June sales for both brands. Compared to June 2007:

Sales of the Canadian-built compact Corolla rose 32 per cent to 5,991 and a new June sales record. The fuel-efficient Corolla recently travelled more than 1,000 km on a single tank to win the CanadianDriver 50-litre Challenge™.

RAV4 compact SUV sales of 1,745 were up 25.2 per cent to set a new June record.

Highlander SUV sales of 377 were up 259 per cent.

Lexus luxury passenger car sales of 934 in June were up 7.4 per cent to set a new June record.

Lexus sold 623 luxury SUVs in June, up 55 per cent to set a new June record.

Sales of the Canadian-built Lexus RX 350 of 393 in June were up 35.5 per cent.

Canadians purchased 1,705 hybrid vehicles (Toyota plus Lexus), up 77.4 per cent versus June of last year to set a new June record for hybrid sales.

Compared to June 2007:
Sales of 1,391 Toyota hybrid passenger cars (Prius + Camry Hybrid) were up 68.6 per cent and represent 8.6 per cent of all Toyota passenger cars sold in June.

Total Lexus hybrid sales of 192 were up 97.9 per cent and represent over 12 per cent of all Lexus sales last month.

Sales of 735 Prius were up 414 per cent. April, May and June are the top three months for Prius sales since Toyota introduced the model in 2000.

Highlander Hybrid sales were up 212.8 per cent at 122 to set a new June record.

Sales of 179 Lexus RX 400h luxury hybrid SUVs were up 113.1 per cent to establish a new June record.

“Drivers continue to turn to Toyota for quality-built, safe and fuel-friendly vehicles, and with a third price reduction announced just yesterday, Canadians can enjoy even greater value,” said Warren Orton, Director at TCI. “With gasoline prices at record levels, and 2009 Corolla pricing that starts lower than 1997 levels, it’s no wonder that Canadians continue to embrace the fuel-efficient Toyota Corolla.”

“Canadian drivers shopping for a fuel-efficient vehicle can turn to Lexus for the world’s only collection of luxury hybrids,” said Yves Gionet, Director of Lexus in Canada. “Record sales of the hybrid RX 400h SUV demonstrate that discerning Canadians are embracing this next-generation, no-compromise technology in their own pursuit of environmental leadership.”
True, but they (Canadian buyer) are also more value conscience than ever, hence Chryslers recent leap frogging in this market.

GM also has an image problem in Canada and the controversy over recent plant closure announcements didn't help them. As JT 87 noted, there is a rising trend where GM is viewed as a bad corporate citizen and Toyota as good one.
From my experience (take it for what it is), Chrysler or Ford are considered as the "canadian" automakers. Most people don't know Toyota and Honda build stuff here, they only know about their green marketing.

GM on the other hand has a **** reputation. Here in Quebec, people I talk to don't really care about Oshawa's fate, but they still can't get over the closing of Boisbriand's plant (Camaro-Firebird).

Mopars are popular vehicles: There are dodge Rams everywhere, Caravans, Jeeps (bad winter), the Caliber-Compass-Patriot are selling really well. Everyone wants a Charger... Just don't mention the word "Chrysler", for some reasons Dodge-Jeep is popular but not Chrysler.

In June, The Ram got a record market share (22%) and The Dodge Journey is now the best selling crossover in Canada. Dodge sponsored all Montreal Canadian's 3rd period this year.. may have had an impact

Rex can confirm but I think that Toyota has been the most agressive one of all the makers to adjust prices downward to take into account the new set of exchange rates. This appears to be and is a huge cash incentive for buyers.

^ I would agree with this.

No one likes being laughed at, which is exactly what GM did when it wanted you to buy a $30,000 car while the exact same car (with a speedo in miles) was priced at ~$20,000 twenty miles further south.

Appears the unofficial, loosely-organized "GM boycott" might have had an impact. I remember I called for it back then.

The bottom line is that the US economy is needing this correction. Especially the housing market, the rapid appreciation that was being seen was not sustainable. My sister made 100k in alittle under 3yrs on her house, thats rediculous. My grandparents told me their house sold for 2k less than they bought it for back in the 70's after 5yrs of living in it, they also had high interest rates then.

It sucks that people got suckered into ( well really were just dumb and signed without knowing the true consequences) buying way more than they could afford. Most of these default loans should have never been drawn up. It was a major reason for the real estate run up and now its the major reason for the downturn being seen in alot of areas. Luckily in my area, in my price range we haven't seen much correction.

Indeed. Toyota was the first to really make true MSRP reductions in their vehicles, for both the Lexus line and the Toyota lineup. The others all just offered rebates off list. This was definitely noticed by the public and they marketed it aggressively. I believe they just dropped everything in price again as well this week.

Meanwhile, most other brands, GM included, try to pawn off different speedometers as reasons for 10k price differences.
