Toyota June Sales in Canada: Corolla new sales record

TOYOTA CANADA INC. ACHIEVES RECORD JUNE SALESFuel-efficient fleet and hybrid models power strong sales

(TORONTO) – A broad selection of fuel-efficient vehicles, including Canada’s best offering of gasoline-electric hybrids, has powered Toyota Canada Inc. to a record June sales performance. TCI sold 22,428 Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks in June, up 8.8 per cent from June 2007, and leading to record June sales for both brands. Compared to June 2007:

Sales of the Canadian-built compact Corolla rose 32 per cent to 5,991 and a new June sales record. The fuel-efficient Corolla recently travelled more than 1,000 km on a single tank to win the CanadianDriver 50-litre Challenge™.

RAV4 compact SUV sales of 1,745 were up 25.2 per cent to set a new June record.

Highlander SUV sales of 377 were up 259 per cent.

Lexus luxury passenger car sales of 934 in June were up 7.4 per cent to set a new June record.

Lexus sold 623 luxury SUVs in June, up 55 per cent to set a new June record.

Sales of the Canadian-built Lexus RX 350 of 393 in June were up 35.5 per cent.

Canadians purchased 1,705 hybrid vehicles (Toyota plus Lexus), up 77.4 per cent versus June of last year to set a new June record for hybrid sales.

Compared to June 2007:
Sales of 1,391 Toyota hybrid passenger cars (Prius + Camry Hybrid) were up 68.6 per cent and represent 8.6 per cent of all Toyota passenger cars sold in June.

Total Lexus hybrid sales of 192 were up 97.9 per cent and represent over 12 per cent of all Lexus sales last month.

Sales of 735 Prius were up 414 per cent. April, May and June are the top three months for Prius sales since Toyota introduced the model in 2000.

Highlander Hybrid sales were up 212.8 per cent at 122 to set a new June record.

Sales of 179 Lexus RX 400h luxury hybrid SUVs were up 113.1 per cent to establish a new June record.

“Drivers continue to turn to Toyota for quality-built, safe and fuel-friendly vehicles, and with a third price reduction announced just yesterday, Canadians can enjoy even greater value,” said Warren Orton, Director at TCI. “With gasoline prices at record levels, and 2009 Corolla pricing that starts lower than 1997 levels, it’s no wonder that Canadians continue to embrace the fuel-efficient Toyota Corolla.”

“Canadian drivers shopping for a fuel-efficient vehicle can turn to Lexus for the world’s only collection of luxury hybrids,” said Yves Gionet, Director of Lexus in Canada. “Record sales of the hybrid RX 400h SUV demonstrate that discerning Canadians are embracing this next-generation, no-compromise technology in their own pursuit of environmental leadership.”

wow. it just amazes me that the trend in Canada is so different. here, down 21%, there, up almost 9%. i guess our recession has quite a bit to do with it. still a little shocking i guess. we went so long without any major economy woes and now we're getting flattened with them.

Not shocking. Canada used to posts record Chevy sales when Americans were buying Toyota.

You have to realize that more and more Camrys and Corrollas are finding their way into taxi and delivery fleets. In fact, where I am about 85% of the taxis are Camrys. Corollas are used mostly as pizza and other delivery vehicles.

BTW, it is not a recession, no matter how many journalists want to sell it as that to sell papers...Most people in the U.S. could not even identify the two-to-three major indicators required to determine a recession. So much for economics' education. Of course it is a political is a political year in the U.S., so we all know some people will say anything to get elected.

Warren Buffet disagrees with you. He says the recession is deepening. We have not have yet to our knowledge met the "one only" classic indicator of a recession "two quarters of negative GMP growth". Recessions are often only visible in the rear view mirror-identifiable only after the fact.

warren buffet is biased as he is a big time liberal and a sneaky activist who tries to portray himself as a moderate. he calls it a recession because it scores political points and erodes Americans confidence.

He stands to gain from their pain and lack of confidence. When the market bottoms out he will dump all his cash reserves and buy low, very, very low. He is self-serving.

It is really an economic slowdown...At least for now.

Liberal-schmiberal. The Dow-Jones Industrials are down 20% off their high. This puts us into a bear market. That is a bad thing.

Do you think that toyota having two(2) manufacturing plants in Canada has anything to do with it? I said before that GM will have a hard time giving away their product in the future , especially in Ontario.

No recession? The only people in the US who don't know that are the filthy rich and the traders so ssssh.

I guess word is getting out that the Corolla and Civic are Ontario-made models, which is helping the sales of both quite well.

I made a point in one of the older union-related threads about the "GM=bad, Honda/Toyota=good" mindset that is STILL being instilled into Canadian minds. Trucks are inherently moving away from Canada. For a traditional 'domestic' vehicle, we will soon be limited to the Edge/Flex/MKX, Challenger/300/Charger, fwd Impala, Camaro (and something big and RWD), and the Theta's in Ingersoll. On the flip side, Honda is making the Civic, Ridgeline (until next year), and the MDX, and Toyota is making the Corolla, Matrix, and the RX (and soon the RAV4).

And people wonder why I kept saying that Toyota and Honda are eating GM's bad PR move (Oshawa closings) for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Don't forget about the Cami plant in Ingersol that produces the Pontiac Torrent and the Chevrolet Equinox

Re: Toyota June Sales in Canada: Corolla new sales record

Canadians historically purchase small, more fuel efficient cars than our U.S. neighbours. This is mostly due in part to the fact fuel prices are generally much higher in Canada (until recently).

GM also has an image problem in Canada and the controversy over recent plant closure announcements didn't help them. As JT 87 noted, there is a rising trend where GM is viewed as a bad corporate citizen and Toyota as good one.

I wondered in a couple of years down the roads if they could said the same song if Toyota's skeletons begins to be more well know and also the rising costs who'll catch up Toyota as well soon or later? If their pick-up truck was located in Ontario instead of San Antonio......

I've somehow ended up at the mall the last two weekends after not going there in 2yrs and there was no signs of a slowdown unless people are driving there to walk around. Parking was ridiculous, you would have thought it was a holiday. Must be all the out of state people enjoying our tax free shopping to save a buck.

You do understand what you have done now? Right?
We (I) will never hear the end of it from a certain GMI marine vertebrate nourishment poster.

I can just see it now.

Toyota simply decided to strategically move its mojo from the U.S. to Canada to give all Canadians the profound experience of owning the world's most celebrated econobox.
It is yet another record breaking month after another record breaking month after another for the Corolla.
I'm so giddy I could pop.
He won't settle down until GM gains another two points of marketshare.
