Re: Toyota FT-86: First Official Photos of Near-Production RWD Sports Coupe, gets Sub

Is Toyota actually going to build a non appliance car? I actually like it.

The success is going to be determined by the price. If it is in 370Z or G37 price range it will fail. If it's priced in the low to mid 20s it might do well.

Re: Toyota FT-86: First Official Photos of Near-Production RWD Sports Coupe, gets Sub

I kind of like it, but it does look more like a Hyundai than anything else. The inside is, odd. I think the production version will look nothing like that.

I do with the outside was a bit better. It's too conservative.

However, with the Sky and Solstice gone there's a definite opening for another coupe that this might just fill.

Now we wait to see if Toyota will make it, how it'll perform, how much it'll weigh, and how much it'll cost. And for some out there, how much fuel it'll suck -- those being from the "I'm green and no one should ever have any fun" crowd.

It looks good. Yes that car does exude some dare I say emotion when you look at it.

As does the Genesis coupe which I finally saw in the wild on the Arsenal at work. That makes once Genesis coupe to six new Challengers, four new Camaros, and .5 billion Mustangs driving around base.

The thing to worry about is not how great it is but now all those Camry lovers do not have to leave the Toyota lot to wake up to RWD goodness anymore.

We'll I'll be darned. Toyota actually designed a car that doesn't inspire me to take a nap.

The interior is very interesting. I like the clean look. Of course that zipper on the DVD drive looks kinda stupid but I don't think that is going to make it to production anyways. I do like how they've simply printed the audio controls onto the dashboard materials instead of making a center console. That is a very interesting concept. I'm very curious to see how that translates to production.

Hmm.

If they can keep it priced alongside, say, the WRX engine for engine (including the STI model), and have Subie's AWD, they might be on to something.

I think it looks pretty good - well proportioned even if the details are a bit strange.

I am glad to see Toyota working on something other than the usual boring fwd stuff. I see some 370z in the hood area and GTR with the greenhouse, overall I like it, has a bit of attitude, is small and compact and will probably move pretty good depending on power.

No need to worry about the interior as article already says that is concept only.

I agree.

It might look a bit odd in some angles, but overall I think it looks ok.

Ummm all I'm seeing is 370Z with some Hyundai thrown in with no engine. Another Toyota fail.

I actually like the exterior - except that the gaping mouth and transition to the headlights needs some work. The headlights look sinister (good).

This car will get snapped up quickly and be the ricer du jour. I'll bet there a lot of Subaru hop up parts that will bolt right on or will be adapted quickly.

Crap - there I go, making positive comments about a Toyota!

Re: Toyota FT-86: First Official Photos of Near-Production RWD Sports Coupe, gets Sub

The Corolla AE86 was popular because it was lightweight, cheap, easy to mod, and had a great platform. If this fails to meet those criteria, it'll be nothing more than Toyota trying to cash in on a platform name. A name that is only known in drift circles (pardon the pun), which happens to be a group of people that will quickly dismiss a vehicle that doesn't perform properly in that environment.

Tada said Toyota wants the FT-86's sticker price to be in the $20,000 range. “It won't sell if it's over 3 million yen ($30,000),” he said. “The price has to appeal to regular customers.”
