Sentra, Accent, and the 3 will fall below that mark for 08. There will be no non-diesel, non-hybrid car that will be able to crack 37-38 mpg.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

If GM could 1 or 2 in that list, they'd be doing a good job.

If small cars are viewed as a committment, instead of an afterthought. They can do it.

    "Minis"?

But somebody posted somewhere else about the Corvair. I've wondered, what if the Corvair was a success? GM would have a great small car, with evolving technology, ready for 1973. Another conspiracy. Maybe Nader knew that GM would succeed in the coming "energy crisis" of 1973 if they had the Corvair, and doomed the Corvair on purpose.

In the final analysis, there was nothing wrong with the Corvair.

And hopefully it wouldn't be tiny micro cars only. GM needs a car the sizes of the Civic and Fit (Cobalt and Aveo) that are near the top of the list. Perhaps the Astra will be better, I certainly hope so. Add a mini-car such as the Beat and the Astra and they could have 4 on the list if they were doing things right.

I'm not so sure there was nothing wrong with the Corvair but the final year it was made they certainly had made it a great little car and fixed most if not all the issues. Unfortunately by then the name and design was doomed to public failure regardless of how good it had become.

The absence of the Detroit 3 is quite conspicuous, and it speaks volumes to the difference between the talk and the walk.

No...if you look at total US sales of these type of vehicles over the past 20 years...you will notice that the Detroit 3 spent that time giving the masses what they wanted. Gas guzzling sedans, trucks, SUVs and minivans. It is only recently that the cars on this list have gained in popularity.

    Better aerodynamics.
Better balance of engine size to vehicle size.
    Better gearing?

Just proves you don't have to be supper small to be supper efficient.

Well, at least according to the EPA. I'm not sure how much worse the mileage is on the new Sentra, but my parents have the previous generation Sentra that gets about 42 mpg highway. The mileage drops a little during the winter.

Thanks to an outdated powertrain. I believe the Astra coming from Europe has the latest in technology in a small 1.8L engine, compared to the 2.2L engine in the Cobalt. The Astra engine has VVT which the 2.2L lacks. The Aveo engine does not have the latest technology such as VVT either. They aren't making enough of an effort. They've put VVT on the 2.4L engine which makes it competitive for its size but the cars that get the best fuel economy are typically 1.8L size motors or smaller.

Re: Top 10 non-hybrid cars that get 30mpg or more:

When I don't use the afterburners I actually get 29-31 mpg from my 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero. I just had a 1200 mile road trip and only filled-up twice each way. While it is not as good in the mpg as the afore-mentioned vehicles it looks better and is better in every other way. Alright so it costs more but, what jet doesn't cost more ;-p

A turbo is a terrible thing to waste!

This list is much much much more impressive and important. It features numbers worth reading. And MANY GM vehicles. By comparison, this list makes the hybrid and even non hybrid car lists that are bragging about fuel efficency get on their knees.

(Toyota didnt make the list...and Hondas only on it once, at the end of it ofcourse.)

Re: Top 10 non-hybrid cars that get 30mpg or more: NOTHING from Detroit

actually there are several Toyotas and Honda's (and Acuras and Lexuses) in that list: NSX, Supra, IS 350, S2000, LS460

now when are we gonna get a car that gets on both lists?? top 10 in mileage and 1/4-mile time?? i hear Porche's thinking of making a hybrid...

The G5 GT / Cobalt SS gets 25 / 34.... not too shabby for a car that can, unlike most on this list, very easily pull a wet stick out of a dog's ass.
I got tired of waiting for GM to make a FWD convertible.
