Acura has announced the long-awaited 2016 NSX will finally debut in production guise next month at NAIAS in Detroit.

They also provided several teaser images with the vehicle which as you can see will stay true to the concept. Acura promises the second generation NSX is going to provide a "new sports experience" and will be the "ultimate expression of Acura performance that is fueling a reenergized brand." Without going too much into technical details, the company says it will have a three-motor, twin-turbocharged Sport Hybrid power unit mounted inside a "human-centered supercar."

The second-gen NSX was originally announced back in the summer of 2005 and was previewed at the 2012 NAIAS by a concept and then updated a year later for the same show. Now, Acura says the production-ready version will premiere on January 12 at NAIAS in Detroit before entering production at the new Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio.

It will be interesting. When the original NSX was launched it was a sensation as it was so good in comparison to it's competition. But today the competition has learned and are all much more well rounded - especially the Corvette. Will this end up being well respected by the auto mags but not many sales like the Nissan GTR?

GT-R starts at $100k. NSX is going to be well north of $100k, probably closer to $150k.

You can get two base Corvettes for one GT-R. Loaded up, a Z06 just cracks $100k.

Low sales for a reason. They're tiny cars that beat you up... most people who can afford them aren't willing to deal with that all the time. People here are already complaining about ATS and CTS being too stiff and they're nowhere near $100-$150k.

Personally, I want to see the Corvette, a regular production Ford GT, and the Viper square off against the new GT-R, the new NSX, and the new Supra.

Drool. Beyond that and totally unrelated, I want to see Honda get a sports car like FR-S.

This is looking to be awesome.

But I don't see it doing a whole lot for the Acura brand if their idea of energizing Acura heralded by this car's launch is going to be cars like the RLX Sport Hybrid. Make a sedan priced like the RLX but with the stunning styling (that we can see, as done by sedan proportions) of the NSX and a fabulous powertrain and now you have people's attention in a more real world setting. You can make a statement with a product like this but if you don't have the volume product to back it up then it won't mean too much. Luckily Acura has the updated ILX, new TLX, and MDX that will keep sales going, but none of those really seem to match the image of style, performance, and human-machine connection that Acura seems to be marketing with the NSX. It's all quite sad because Honda more than has the resources and know how to build the vehicles of which I dream.
