Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

Turbo FTW.

When a turbo is paired with a nice engine, potential becomes almost endless.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

So its cool that Mustang has a turbo 4, but when GM thinks about putting a turbo 4 in the Camaro, its the end of the world and GM is gunna go bankrupt!!!

Camaro near 4klbs? yeah, the 550hp Supercharged Z28.
SS will be lighter, V6 lighter then that.
Turbo 4 weights the same as a V6. All the turbo equipment offsets the weight loss of the 4cyl engine from a V6.

Ford cheaped out on the Mustang. One of the engineers said it would have cost less then 200 dollars per unit to engineer a propper IRS system, but they wanted to cut costs as much as possible.
So they used the old Fbody's suspension set up.

The 2010 Mustang is already going to come in around 100-150 lbs lighter than the 2005-2009 model. The old iron-block 4.0L V6 is being replaced by an aluminum one in the V6 model. The current V6 model weighs around 3300 lbs or so, and this will drop the weight even further.

Even the GT500 will get an aluminum engine, which will reduce some of its current outrageous piggery...
I did some research at the Ford Media, Ford Racing Performance Parts, and Ford Power Products websites and I found the following:

The curb weight of a Mustang GT with a manual transmission is listed at 3,356lbs at Ford Media. An automatic equipped version is listed at 3,540lbs.

The FRPP catalog lists the dressed weight of the 4.6L SOHC 24v V8 in the 2005+ Mustang GT at 420lbs (pg. 94).

The Ford Power Products website lists the dry weight of the Mazda 2.0L and 2.3L I4s at 240lbs and 242lbs respectively (which makes sense since they are similar engines).

Assuming an I4 like these Mazda engines is used for an SVO Mustang, along with the extra weight of turbocharging hardware, the "500lbs" saved against a Mustang GT will certainly have to come from more than the powertrain alone.

I was banking (one day) that ford may make the mustang somewhat of a canyon carver instead of the one trick pony that it is today. IRS and weight savings would fix that.
One thing I would rather see is that they used a h.o. v6 that runs on regular and has more lower end torque that would return similar mpg to a turbo 4 though.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

Looks like with news that GM may put a Turbo-4 into the Camaro... Ford wants something to compete.. Dodge next? Dodge does have the turbo-4 from the Caliber SRT4 that makes more power then what the Challenger SE has.

I think those weight figures are with an empty tank, and no optional equipment.

Save 500lbs from swapping in a smaller engine and changing some materials? Ha, not-gonna-happen.

This is definitely the right time for a new SVO 4 cylinder Mustang..

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

This Camaro fan doesn't expect the new Mustang to be a piece of crap, in fact I hope it is a great car that will inspire GM to try even harder on the next Camaro. I'm thankful for the Mustang because it was what pushed GM to create the Camaro in the first place.

Personally, I feel no hate (or love) for the Mustang. It just doesn't appeal to me on an emotional level. The 'Stang has always struck me as a car that wasn't very inspiring to be such an "icon". The original Mustang was a pretty Ford Falcon. Where the original Camaro did borrow from the Chevy II, but as far as I know it only shared the basic -unibody with front subframe- design. This is just an example of the many ways the Mustang has sought style rather than substance. (I won't even go into the abomination that was the Mustang II).

In summary, a 5,000lb 200hp Camaro would be more attractive to me than a 800hp 2,500lb Mustang. I admit it is illogical, but love is never logical and i luv camaros.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

last I heard Ford is working on reducing the weight on all the vehicle line-up by using high strenght steel and we might see how it will affect the new F150 and this is the weight on the mustang by model

V6 coupe MT/AT:
3,350 lb (1,520 kg)/3,420 lb (1,551 kg)
V6 convertible MT/AT:
3,475 lb (1,576 kg)/3,555 lb (1,613 kg)
V8 coupe MT/AT:
3,480 lb (1,579 kg)/3,525 lb (1,599 kg)
V8 convertible MT/AT:
3,610 lb (1,637 kg)/3,655 lb (1,658 kg)
GT500 coupe:
3,920 lb (1,778 kg)
GT500 convertible:
4,040 lb (1,833 kg)

and considering the 4.0 weight 367 lbs but it might be a little more and the 4.6 weights 550 lbs and thats from the Ford performance site and with the numbers you found from the 4 add close to 90 pounds fron the DI and TT http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=9638
if they are able to cut 100lbs in engine and 200 in chassis weight they can hit the 3000 lbs mark and even with 3200 lbs if they are able to get 300hp out of the 4 it will be a blast

They'll need a 4 cylinder to keep with CAFE standards.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

There is now way in heck it will weigh only 3000lbs. Look at the Z06. It is one of the lightest sports/supercars made. Now compare the longer, taller and all metal Mustang.
a 4 cylinder at best will drop 100-150lbs off a iron V6. If the tranny is made lighter than some more weight savings.
I'll be willing to bet anybody on this forum that it will not weigh 3000lbs.
