4100 lbs is way off anything I've ever seen published for a stock Mustang GT convertible. In fact, the quoted weight for the V8 convertible is around 3600 lbs everywhere I've looked.

Not sure why you're measuring such a difference. Perhaps the scales being used simply aren't that accurate or are not properly calibrated. Perhaps it's how the two are being measured .. not sure if the official measure includes all fluids (gas weights 6 lbs per gallon so a full tank can be a difference of nearly 100 lbs) or if your measure includes the driver (obviously, that would boost the measure by a couple of hundred lbs). Also, not sure if your GT is stock -- bigger wheels can weigh more as do some other mods.

The Shelby GT500 convertible does weigh in at over 4000 lbs mostly because it uses an iron block and has the extra weight of the supercharger. That and heavier duty parts (bigger brakes and wheels weigh more) add a lot of weight.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

Hurray for Ford! Offering a high output 4 banger is a smart move! This means Mustang will survive this lastest gas crisis while Camaro and Challenger will be canceled (once again) by2012. Now hopefully Ford will have the sense to downsize the car over the next decade like it did in the past.

Shh! Don't let the Camaro fans hear you!

The Camaro will actually weigh 3500 lbs, get 30mpg, get to 60 in 4.8 seconds, and outsell the Mustang 2 to 1.

So I'm guessing that this going to be available before the 4cyl turbo Camaro GM was pondering?

I would not trade you the wheels off of my Camaro for every mustang you could park in Andrews, NC.

You can wash 'em, scrub 'em & powder them well but you can't get rid of that ford smell!

So you prefer the Camaro smell, which is actually the smell of the Mustang's exhaust from 5 car lengths up blowing back in your face after smoking you?

A regular GT (I have one though that's not the one we weighed) and a Shelby GT (not a GT500!) on Longacre racing scales and Heartland Park Topeka's scales all come in right around 3500lbs with fuel. My '95 camaro Z28 with modifications to make it lighter was 3370lbs with a nearly full tank and that sounds about right. I think the dragstrip needs to recalibrate.

And from spending time underneath both a S197 Mustang and a 4th and 3rd gen f-body, GM could (and hopefully has) learned a lot from the simplicity Ford designed in to the Mustang's chassis. Most things are easily reached and most service is easy to perform. It basically has a "nascar" rear and a BMW M3 (E36) front. I hope the new Camaro has IRS, but if it weighs 4000lbs I'll have to rethink my purchase plans.

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

Well, I arguably see more modified s197 cars than anyone in the midwest where I work. I am not certain why there is a discrepency in the weights you are seeing, but I can assure you, ours were weighed without drived. As far as the scaled we have our own 4 corner scale, it has been to Skinny Kid's scales, and Milan Dragway's scales...

I go by factory weights. We can't get into what modifications and fluids do to a vehicle's weight, because we need to be able to judge everyone by the same standard. I could say my buddy's Escalade ESV weighs less than my other buddy's Toyota Corolla, but I forgot to mention the Escalade is stripped out into a drag car with no seats or trim, and this Corolla uses a lead hood, lead doors, and a lead trunk.

Yes it is. Especially considering a Subaru STi is about 300 hp, but weighs in between 3200 and 3400 lbs depending on the trim.

Also, considering the Camaro is going to be pushing 4,000 pounds, this Mustang should do quite well.

Ford needs a winner and this will be it.

I'm Sorry, I forgot that an axle back exhaust and a cold air intake add over 300 lbs

Re: SVO Badge To Return For 2010 Ford Mustang

This is a good option, but I'm glad its not replacing the entry level v8. The weight difference from the 4 cylinder is likely to be 200-250 lbs which is good. However, is it just me, or does nobody ever take sound into the equation when comparing a N/A v8 to turbo'd 6 or 4 cylinder. I'm pretty sure there's a reason that in general, mustang/car commercials make sure to use v8 sound clips and not clips from a loud 4 or 6 cylinder.

Your scales are wrong.

I've never seen a Mustang weigh more than 100 lbs more or less than the factory numbers. You're not the only one at drag strips...

More like wishful thinking for the legions of Camaro fans who will buy one the first year, then wonder why it disappeared 3 years later.
