It remains “business as usual” for Suzuki in Canada despite a decision by its counterpart in the United States to discontinue auto sales and seek court protection from its creditors while it focuses on other products.

“Suzuki Canada has no current plans to discontinue automobile sales in Canada nor are we contemplating any form of court-supervised restructuring as they have done in the United States,” Suzuki Canada spokesman Bill Porter said in an interview Tuesday.

Porter said Suzuki Canada is emphasizing the fact that the two companies are not connected and that the news in the United States is not expected to have any impact on Suzuki’s Canadian operations.

“Our sales are up over last year so its business as usual in Canada, that’s the message we’ve given to our dealers and certainly to our customers as well. No change at all.”

so I wonder who (suzuki canada or suzuki JPN) is going to take over for product certification as I assume most was done by the Suzuki USA +
maybe the swift will come to canada as the OLD swift+ (copy of pontiac wave/aveo) is now gone as GM no longer builds them

This is really really odd to me. There is that big of a difference in a smaller market next to a large one?

I know that but if the product is the same I would expect the sales to suffer in both countries. So while not corperately related I would think the same product would yeild simular results.

"Suzuki Canada has no current plans to discontinue automobile sales in Canada..."

As someone who frequently writes statements for public distribution, I find this statement to be rather strange as it insinuates that while we do not have plans for today, there is the potential for such plans in the future.
While I realize that there is always potential for different corporate plans in the future, why would Mr. Porter provide such an open ended statement towards such a sensitive subject? If I was a Suzuki Canada employee, customer or dealer I wouldn’t find any assurance from this media release.

I'm slightly reassured by this as I prefer to have more choice than less choice. I'm pretty sure the Kizachi may gain traction with various engines (V6 or hybrid) in the future. A local business here uses an AWD SX4. The AWD is useful in this hilly area.

Why would we implode? It is no different than when GM went bankrupt in the US but not in Canada, our plants never missed a beat, kept running even overtime while the ones in the States were all closed for the bankruptcy.

Re: Suzuki Canada unaffected by U.S. problems

i sold em up until a cpl months ago. i even went to 13 MY training. when the questions were posed re: going out of business in the US...the Suzuki folks were extremely adamant about it not being the case, not even close, that despite low unit sales, they were profitable.

in the PR for the going out of business i found it strangely worded as if to imply they were not shutting down the future idea of selling cars in the US again.

The product line was starved of meaningful updates and new models till at least 2014. the VW thing screwed suzuki up big time. I just wonder if say 3 years from now they don't re-enter, with significantly less dealers.

there was one dealer i know of moving 100 units a month. and of course many averaged like, a half dozen. How many dealers does Fiat have? IMO, the conspiracy theorist in me says, wait a few years they may be back in different form.

Totally sucked we did not get the swift and that we won't get the S-cross when it comes out. That matrix sized vehicle would have have been EXACTLY what the market wants here in the US. SX4 too small for most folks.

makes me sad because with better marketing, option and model packaging and better pricing, the Kizashi could easily move up to like 30-40k units a year itself.

Probably less overall than in the US, I'd bet. But Canada is a smaller market. In my area they are non-existent, though. We don't have a Suzuki dealer within 2 hours of us. I never see them on the road.

It's just a matter of time before they get the memo.
