That is the kind of thinking that got GM to where they are right now.

If I were you, being a Toyota fan and all, I'd be terrified of how they seem to follow the old General's footsteps in so many ways: from the "a car for everyone" (appliances for the lowest common denominator?) mantra; building cheap, selling for anything but; relying all too much on their image of past glory; and finally, it seems we may very well be witnessing the start of their decline... a good 30 years faster than GM did, while the General is turning things around, and possibly without getting the #1 title at any time.

Of course, you can just sit there worshipping toyota blindly all-day, every day, if you want. But know that denial isn't a solution to any problems, just a symptom of when there is a real problem and a hinderence to getting it solved. I say this because you are not the only one, all Toyota people I talk to these days (fans and employees alike) seem to have this "nothing to see here, automakers implode all the time" attitude.

Oh, and I just thought of another simularity between the two: GM's strongest suit was marketing (pre-actually-paying-attention-to-the-product), Toyota's is presently PR.

Re: Shirking Recalls: Toyota Officials Probed in alleged Criminal Negligence

You know what makes me laugh! Out at the Ford Discussion exeryone is complaining about the death of the Town Car. Would anyone like to see the death of this ancient V12 "Luxuslimousine", produced in somewhat the same way since 1967? If you know what I'm talking about, it's the Toyota Century.

Now this is one model that needs to go!
Seriously, Toyota will probably have its share of problems. Everyone does, as Mitsu showed us. Now I wonder if the same fate given to Toyota will spread to Daihatsu, Lexus, and Hino.

(3 arrows down) Toyota. The Japanese company that stands for truth, justice and the American Way has a little recall problem on its hands - and they're having a difficult time concealing it from the media and the public. Toyota is recalling about 420,000 vehicles, including almost 35,000 in the U.S. - the third recall this month alone. Is this simply a momentary lapse on their way to world domination? Or have they embarked on a debilitating cycle of quality lapses that will spin out of control? We think the latter. They're going too fast and trying to do too much, and they're making a lot of assumptions along the way that things will work out just as they always have. Well, it's not working, and there are cracks clearly developing in the company's Teflon kimono. The Chief Master Manipulator himself, however, begged to differ. Toyota president Jim Press dismissed the recall with the following comment in Washington on Tuesday: "Recalls are an example of opportunities we have sometimes where we can make repairs to cars before customers have failures. Our quality is very high and always at the very top." Huh? Alrighty then, Jim! So when any other car company has recalls, it's a sign of their overall weakness and lack of fortitude, right, Jim? But with Toyota it's an opportunity to show everyone how great you are? Nah, our bull**** detector just went off, Jim. We're not buying it - and your problem is that the rest of the country is starting to not buy it either. But good luck with trying to offer that explanation whenever you're given the "opportunity."
