Shelby Series 2 To Debut at Pebble Beach

IL Exclusive: $220K Shelby Series 2 Slotted To Debut at Pebble Beach
Date posted: 06-22-2006

The Shelby 1 Series is set to be joined by the $220,000 Series 2, expected to debut in mid-August.

MONTEREY, Calif. — The reincarnated Shelby Series 2 sports car, complete with restyled front and rear bumpers and other improvements, is expected to make its public debut in mid-August at the 2006 Concorso Italiano here.

Even before the first of the cars rolls off the assembly line this weekend in Las Vegas, the limited-edition Series 2 appears to be virtually sold out, with all but a handful of the $220,000 two-seaters already spoken for, according to a source familiar with the Series 2 program.

The Cobra-like Series 2 is the successor to the ultrafast Series 1, which employed a carbon-fiber shell on an aluminum honeycomb frame. Under the hood, a supercharged Oldsmobile DOHC 4.0-liter V8 packed more than 400 horsepower.

The Series 2 will be in heady company at its coming-out party. This year's Concorso Italiano marks the 35th anniversary of Pantera's entry into North America. Designer Tom Tjaarda and Santiago DeTomaso are among the invited guests.

What this means to you: Not much time left to buy a new Shelby Series 2.

Not my favorite car, but definitely fast. And there's no way in hell I'd pay $220k for it.

really, does anyone really care? it's ugly, and goes head to head with cars that are ten times better at the same price or even less.. there are better places to lay that cash down. Z06 anyone?

oldsmobile Dohc 4.0L V8 with 400Hp sounds goods but the price doesn't.

I would take a Z06.

I agree. Give me a Z06 and $135K to spend on other things and day of the week versus this thing.

Almost sold out? Like I'm really heartbroken about that one. I will take two Corvette Stingrays for that price.

Re: Shelby Series 2 To Debut at Pebble Beach

I don't know if it will still use an Olds/Aurora V8 block. No doubt you could make them but perhaps now that he's signed on with Ford to do the Shelby, GR1 and Shelby Cobra concepts, I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up using a Ford motor in the Series 2 IMHO.

Though it would be nice to see something like a turbo or s/c Northstar under the hood if some contractual obligation made him have to stick with GM as a suplier!

I saw one in town few weeks ago... almost missed it. For $220K it needs to look exotic not like a kit car.
