Review: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Quote:
CarThrottle Throughout the history of the automotive industry and other industries too, there have been times (admittedly rare) when a company not only manages to survive in a difficult climate, but thrive. An example of that would no doubt have to be Hyundai and its sister brand Kia, both of which have managed to increase market share and sales, on the strength of strong product.

One of the turning points for Hyundai was the Buyer Assurance Program that offered the ability for an owner to give a purchased vehicle back to the company in the event of losing their job.

The program proved to be very successful, enabling customers worried about their job security to get a new car, as well as being a big statement about Hyundai’s commitment to its products – it was something no-one else was doing at the time. Competitors sure copied it after though, aiming to replicate its success.

The first big step towards higher ambitions for Hyundai started with the Azera. Many thought that the Azera was a stretch for Hyundai at the time, but the company didn’t stop there, introducing the rear-wheel drive Genesis Sedan and Genesis Coupe. Now they are going even further still, with the next model in this onslaught slated to be the Equus, a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

When are they going to stop screwing around and come out with the GT-R killer?

Twin Turbo V6 Genesis.

You really have to hand it to Hyundai. While I would never buy one myself, they are putting out some nice vehicles.

Amazing the progress that Hyundai has made. I think that their new Sonata looks awesome.

Why? While the performance of the Genesis Coupe is just fine, and Hyundai has really come a long way, I would hardly consider the Sky a bad car to this coupe. Of course, these two cars have different missions, but I see nothing wrong with the Sky. For one thing, the Sky gives up absolutely nothing to this Genesis in exterior design.

Re: Review: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

I've only ever seen 1 on the road. I live about 40 miles North of Manhattan. Are these things poor sellers or is it just my area? I see plenty of Scion Tcs, 350Zs, G35/37s, Mustangs and new Camaros. Used to see Tiburons too.

Re: Review: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

I've yet to see one on the street out here also...but winter is just ending. Now if summer comes and goes and I still don't see one on the street, then that would be telling.

The local Hyundai dealer only has one Genesis Coupe on the lot, FWIW.

I think the Sonata looks kind of ugly but I hear it's a good car.

Re: Review: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

I've seen one and it looks like a 5/4ths sized Triburon to me. I give Hyundai credit for producing cars that many people seem to want. Just don't include me in that group.

Re: Review: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundai has a knack for designing cars that look like they've already been in an accident. Started with the first gen Santa Fe, and now this coupe.

Why anyone would buy this instead of a Camaro, or even a Mustang, is hard to fathom, but of course it's the "import tuner" fan. I'll bet the resale will suck, too.

I thought it was kind of "just ok" in pics, but after seeing one in person yesterday, it's a sharp looking car in person...and priced very competitively.

I don't think the Malibu or Fusion have anything to worry about, but if I were Honda, Toyota, or Nissan I'd be watching this car very closely.

I am all the more convinced that Hyundai is leaving no stone unturned. I can see them as becoming a top seller.
