Production Version of the Honda FCX Fuel-Cell Vehicle Debuts Next Month
Crap. More Honda news that's going to bite.
Link: http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/..._the_hond.html No where's the EV-1 or Volt? |

Re: Production Version of the Honda FCX Fuel-Cell Vehicle Debuts Next Month
What I'm wondering is where the hydrogen will come from to fuel these cars. I saw a report on TV about a hydrogen powered car Honda car somewhere in the US. The hydrogen was generated by electrolysis using electricity generated by solar panels. The problem was the hydrogen station's solar array was about a block long and only generated enough hydrogen for one fill-up of one car per week.
Frankly, I think this is a marketing ploy. Fuel Cell technology is pretty mature, GM had a fuel cell car that could go 300 miles and do 0-60 in 10 seconds in 2005 (see link below). http://media.gm.com/events/autoshows...fuel_cell.html It sounds great to read that a manufacture will go into so called "production" with hydrogen powered fuel cell vehicles. But the reality is most automobile manufactures already have that technology. The real issue is the avaiability of hydrogen in sufficient quantity to power cars with fuel cells. This infrastructure does not exist now, and it is not foreseen in the immediate future. |

I hope it looks exactly like the stunning, sleek, futuristic burgundy-colored concept that has been making the rounds. And with so many breakthroughs in hydrogen generation of late, especially the biological ones, plus breakthroughs in storage mediums, having this car on the road even in small numbers could provide a stimulus similar to the first few Model Ts on the road creating a demand for the development and appearance of new-fangled "gas stations" that seemed so rare and odd in a horse-based culture.

Despite all claims to the contrary, GM is playing a leadership role in fuel-cell development and practical implementation. The 100 Equinoxes are already on the road. It's just a matter of how GM is proceeding. There are 2 Honda leases at this point. GM could turn around tomorrow and instantly lease 100 fuel cell vehicles. Instead, GM is continuing fifth-generation cell development while getting the "real deal" out in front of customers. Funny, I haven't seen 100 Honda fuel cell vehicles anywhere, anyhow, anyway. How can that be? And BTW, Honda's natural-gas reforming method is a joke. It takes less than 3 volts to hydrolize water, which can be done off-peak at considerably less difficulty, cost, and with no additional carbon dioxide.
