Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

Porsche announces development of Cayman sports car; vehicle to slot between Boxster, 911
Posted Date: 2/23/05
Porsche long-rumored fourth vehicle line has finally been announced. Called the Cayman S, the vehicle will be a two-seat sports car based on the Boxster. Porsche says it will be available for the 2006 model year.

Positioned and priced between the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S, the Cayman will be powered by a 295 hp, 3.4-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine mounted amidships. Porsche also claims the Cayman's increased space utilization will make it a more practical type of sports car.

The front eh, back eh, but the side profile is gorgious.

I dont think at 295HP its going to steal to many vette sales though.

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

I wouldnt be surprised to see the 911's 3.6 or even 3.8 make its way into a hi-po version...but they did say that this was the S model...hrm.

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

This is a nice car but I don't think it's going to steal sales from the Vette. This is a great option for the guy who wants more power than the boxster but can't afford the 911. I think this is a good move by Porsche. I like how they increased interior space.

Porsche needs to make their cars look a lil different. I'm all for brand identity, but come on...

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

I would have never thought that there was enough room between the Boxster and 911 for another sports car. Let's hope, for Porsche's sake, that I am wrong. Not a very attractive car though. Why not build a smaller front engine, rear drive car though. We all know that Porsche can do mid and rear engined cars already.

the boxster s is allready overpriced: they don't need this. it will steal away 911 sales

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

hey wow... it looks like every other Porsche in the line up... I don't think many folks buying vettes cross shop at the Porsche dealer anyway.

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

Porsche can name what ever price they want to because they is hardly any competition when it comes to engineering solutions, materials used and build quality.

But I think that Cayman doesnt fit at all between boxster and 911. They were going to make a hardtop boxster but then got greedy. Development of these kind of cars takes huge amounts of money, they need all they can get.
Porsche wants to get rid of airplane engines also, because of losses.

Corvette and Porsche buyers dont mix, they are totally different people buying different products. No losses for GM because of Cayman.

I agree. I yawn when I see a Porsche anymore. Their design idea is good, but they have not evolve the design very well.

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

This car reminds me of the GTO; excellent road data but lacking looks. I would not even think of purchasing this car (or a Boxster) instead of a vette. Hell, I could smoke these cars all day pulling up to a light with a rail but who cares?

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

In price it will be against the Corvette, since this is slotted between the Boxster and 911, but that seems a little high for a vehicle with about 300HP. But still, it's a Porsche and will probably be able to keep up with the Vette.

Re: Porsche Cayman: Corvette fighter?

Isn't it essentially a Boxster with a roof?

I think it will sell well.
