Porsche 4 door!

Porsche Panamera: Concept version of automaker's fourth model line due this fall
GREG KABLE
Posted Date: 3/15/05

Porsche’s anticipated fourth model line has a name: Panamera. Registered by Porsche at the same time as the Cayman moniker it is applying to the upcoming Boxster-based coupe, the new name is expected to grace a concept version of the car, which insiders describe as a combination of coupe and sedan, at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Due out in 2008, the Panamera has been conceived as successor to the 928. Designed with space for four adults, it is also tipped to come clothed in a four-door body in a move that will pitch it into direct competition with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Maserati Quattroporte.

Secrecy surrounds the mechanical basis for the new car, though the Stuttgart rumor mill suggests Porsche chairman Wendelin Wiedeking has forged links with Volkswagen on a new rear-wheel-drive platform program in a move similar to that undertaken with the Cayenne and Touareg. Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder is interested in adding a new rear-wheel-drive model to the Volkswagen lineup between the Passat and Phaeton, and after the recent breakdown in talks with Maserati, it seems additional cooperation with Porsche may be in the cards.

Power for the new car is set to come from the same 4.5-liter V8 engines as those offered on the Cayenne. They include a naturally aspirated version with 340 hp and a turbo****charged unit with 450 hp. An even more powerful model with more than 500 hp is also in the pipeline. Up to 20,000 examples of the Panamera are expected to roll annually from Porsche’s Leipzig factory in Germany, where it will be produced alongside the Cayenne.

Re: Porsche 4 door!

Why couldn't they make the rear suicide doors blend in more so it looks like a coupe. Saturn and Mazda were able to pull it off, I know Porsche could.

Re: Porsche 4 door!

Oh I dunno... that looks sexy! I guess they wanted it to clearly be a four door, but with a difference. Love the rear end on that. This is much more exciting than any Porsche SUV ever could be.

Re: Porsche 4 door!

It took a minute to sink in.At first I thought it was ugly, but after taking another look, it's not so bad.
In fact, I give them a thumbs up for breaking out of the ordinary.
This car may do very well when it comes out.

Re: Porsche 4 door!

Okay well one is a photochop... if not both... this red one has normal door handles, while the other looks like suicide doors. The front-engine thing makes it a bad idea perhaps, but I think the styling is perfect.

Having owned both a 911 Carrera (1976 3.0L) and a 928S (1986½) I have to say the 928 exceeds the 911 in everyway. The 928 was killed by the "purists" that says Porsche should be air-cooled... I guess they lost that argument today. The 928 had to go upmarket towards the end of its life cycle. My 928S looked every bit as fresh as any of the sports car today. I often get comments like "That's a 18 year old car?" or "That's a Porsche? I thought all Porsches look like a bug." This car (photochopped or not) does not even live up to be the successor to the 928. Porsche needs to go back to the ol' drawing board.

I said allready the 928 was good! I'm a fan of the last '90's+ gts ones. they were faster than the mighty 911 turbo...
no way they gonna build this oddity, I HOPE is a bad joke!
