Performance TRD Corolla Unlikely, Says Toyota

Red Light For TRD Corolla

James Stanford
15 November 2007
www.goauto.com.au

Toyota Australia’s best selling model is unlikely to be given the TRD treatment.

Despite Corollas blitzing the competition in the Australian Rally Championship, Toyota Australia will not release a hot road-going version in the foreseeable future.

Toyota Australia is likely to announce a third TRD model, to follow the Aurion and HiLux, at some stage next year, but that model will not be a Corolla.

GoAuto can reveal the company did dabble with a performance Corolla, enhancing a version of the existing Corolla engine, but the performance improvements were simply not great enough.

“To throw on a turbocharger, a supercharger or modify the chip wouldn’t realise enough power for it to qualify as a true TRD model,” said Toyota Australia product planning manager Doug Soden.

Toyota won't dilute TRD name with a under-performing Corolla TRD. I said it's wise.

So, to qualify as a TRD, it can't perform like a TuRD? It sure looks like one.

Oh man. That is the most depressing news I've heard all day.
What's next?
The plans to bring back the Echo have been sidelined?

The TRD Camry isnt all that flash in the performance stakes either. Its not like Toyota have a high base to begin with.

It's the Auris, in some markets it has completely replaced the Corolla, and in others it is sold alongside the Corolla as the hatchback model. The closest we get in the US is the Matrix and Vibe.

I give the Auris/Corolla 5 Door hatch a thumbs up. The Blade is another cool variant that could have made a decent TRD model:

I'd take the Auris or Blade over any of these.

TRD stands for POS...

"doesnt qualify as a true TRD model" yeah ok when you HAVE a TRUE TRD variant of something then you can say that. When you dont have jacksquat then what does TRD represent??

Besides, they did that with the Camry/Aurion didnt they?
Slapped a supercharger on the Aurion and called it a day......

every minute that passes, Toyota gets more dumber and dumber.....
