Nissan U.S. June sales down 19 percent

Nissan U.S. June sales down 19%

DETROIT, July 3 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. (7201.T: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said U.S. vehicle sales fell 19 percent, as weakened demand for Nissan and Infiniti-branded vehicles offset gains in the automaker's Murano and Frontier brands.

The Japanese automaker, whose board on Monday approved exploratory discussions on a potential three-way alliance with General Motors Corp. (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Renault SA (RENA.PA: Quote, Profile, Research), said it sold 75,154 vehicles in the United States last month, compared with 92,781 vehicles a year earlier.

Discussions on the possible partnership will follow if GM supports the proposal, Nissan said.

GM does not. They never said so. Renault also does not seem to. Only Kerkorian and Ghosn want to. Let's see - Nissan's in trouble and GM is in trouble. Nissan still has some money left to pull themselves out of the mud. But no, let's sepnd this money into merging (but not totally, a bit) with a bigger trouble and create world's biggest trouble and perhaps cash in world's biggest compensation for managing a trouble...

Neither Renault nor Nissan, and most troubuling GM, has said anything about not wanting this deal. The fact that they all are thinking so much about it is not a good sign.

Re: Nissan U.S. June sales down 19 percent

GM cannot just say that "no" because GM is not a person. GM is an organisation of various people with internal politics. Such things need to be discussed and some internal strenghts and weaknesses of some people tested for the board or Wagoner to be able to formulate a statement on behalf of the company.

I guess GM will finally say something like "we want to explore the ways we can cooperate further with Renault-Nissan", and so will Renault, and then after a few months they will issue a statement that they will "further enhance" their cooperation on light commercial vehicles in Europe.

GM could have said no, the same way that Chrysler said no way back when kerkorian tried to take them over, or not say anything which would have been the same thing. Instead they put together a wishy-washy press release that didn't say anything but did say a lot. The fact is that neither company has denied the possibility or interest in this deal.

In the interest of their stockholders they have to look seriously into this. I hope in the end nothing comes of it... but a responsible business can't plug their ears and say "I'm, not listening".

I know, but the release with which they responded to Kerkorians letter is less than encouraging.

No, GM is being forced to talk to Nissan/Renault by it's single largest shareholder, one Kirk Kerkorian. I don't know of any good reason for any of the parties involved to enter in to such a "three-way".

Why oh why is THIS not front page news, too? Everyone gloats and preens when the domestics fall, but this seems to have gone un-noticed by the media at large.

I am sure however that Nissan will grouped in with the "Japanese" who have made massive foward strides while only the Americans' sales have fallen...

Silly question. Didn't you see that Toyo is up 14%!? That means that the domestics are hanging on by a thread and all the foreign competition is doing really well.

Hey, you do realize Nissan is still one of -- if not the -- most profitable automankers out there, right?

And a drop in percentage of sales would be expected when several new products debuted back-to-back in a prior two-year span. When the new and next-generation products go on sale, sales will be up again.

Funny how some of you simply take things at face value and don't take the time to analyze why something happens.
