Nissan rejects the Cube & Tiida for the U.S. market

Nissan will bring 2 cars from Mexico
By Kathy Jackson
Automotive News / July 25, 2005

LOS ANGELES -- Two small Nissans for the United States will be built in Mexico.

A three-door hatchback arrives next summer and a sedan comes in early 2007, sources say.

Nissan Motor Co. had said it will add two small cars to the U.S. lineup to compete with Scion, Toyota Motor Corp.'s youth brand. The boxy Nissan Cube and the Tiida sedan, both sold in Japan, were considered prime candidates but were rejected.

"The Cube was canned because it's too small," one source says. "The Tiida is too Japanese for this market."

The hatchback is based on the Sport Concept, shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show in March.

The sources say the hatchback and the sedan will be built at Nissan's plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

The sedan will account for 60 percent of the total. The plant also will build some units for Mexico, Europe, Canada, and Central and South America.

A redesigned Sentra is scheduled to go on sale in the United States in the summer of 2006.

One source says there is talk of expanding the Aguascalientes plant.

Nissan spokesman Kyle Bazemore says: "We said that we would be bringing a B-segment car to the United States" smaller than the Sentra. "But we are not yet ready to say where it will be built."

Knowing Nissan, these will be very nice entry's, but probably slightly odd looking in some way. The current Sentra was the slightly odd-ball entry. The Altima is very nice looking, but the Maxima looks bloated... not horrible overall, but just kinda odd in its implementation. As far as their minivan entry, that is oddly attractive, but again oddly proportioned in some manners as well.

Tiida...i swear i've seen that in America before!!!since then i been trying to pin what car it was.i knew it was a Nissan!!it looked different from the Japanese market version.in fact it was a sedan.
the front end's face looked like a 2002 altima with slightly modified headlights.i couldn't see the back end!but i know i saw a Tiida in America.

Of course it exists, otherwise we wouldn't have the song "I think I'm turing Japanese" even though that song didn't really mean about Japanese.

I don't see why they say its too small, as plenty of tiny cars exist in the U.S.

No it's not. The Megane is different. See the C-pillar, the angle of the grille, and the head/taillights. The two cars are different, because why would they can the Tiida for being to Japanese while Renault is thinking of coming back to the US with the Megane car, when you say it's the same as the Tiida? The Megane is not a Tiida.

i understand what your saying but maybe theres a possiblity that the megane isn't coming over here either.btw renault isnt coming to america until at 2010 so by then the megane should be getting redesigned.

i think they are the same.the renault just looks older than the nissan.maybe someone should post pics of both cars made in the same model year.
