Mustang to become a brand? Ford counters Pontiac
Mainstream Mustangs
Sedan and wagon models to join coupe as Ford builds on pony car’s strong brand ![]() By GREG KABLE AND BOB GRITZINGER ![]() AutoWeek | Published 12/13/06, 9:15 am et Ford’s iconic Mustang is poised to play a crucial role in Ford’s future by expanding beyond its traditional role as a single performance figurehead into a complete range of global models. And the company’s Australian arm looks like the source for all the necessary hardware. In a secret product planning meeting last fall, key Ford executives discussed a bold strategy to take the legendary Mustang mainstream. Ideas include both sedan and wagon variants of America’s original muscle car, with those cars joining the traditional coupe when the sixth-generation Mustang arrives in U.S. showrooms in 2011, AutoWeek sources say. More Here (Register for More Info) ------------- Using the mustang name for a full brand of vehicles will no doubt be controversial....but it will give Ford a convenient outlet for countering GM's Pontiac . The sedan in that AW chop looks HOT... Igor Last edited by ChevroletRevived : 12-13-2006 at 02:03 PM. |

Re: Ford counterring Zeta/Pontiac - Mustang to become a brand
OMG, Ford's "We Don't Have a Clue" plan gets into second gear! Roger Smith will be unseated as the record-holder in lunatic marketing.
Of course doing anything as simple as importing RWD Ford Falcon as is from Australia and reinvigorating the Ford itself is out of the question... PS. The sedan in this shop looks like a capsized boat that got angry. |

Good luck Ford...you're gonna need it with this crap! I seriously think that is a "bad" move and "bold" at the same time!

Re: Ford counterring Zeta/Pontiac - Mustang to become a brand
Wow - a Mustang wagon? A Mustang Sedan? What are they thinking???? I was having high hopes for Ford, but this really dashes those hopes.
Making a sedan and wagon based off the Mustang platform is fine, but to slap on the Mustang name? I hope this idea dies quickly. |

Bad move. Smart move sharing platforms from OZ. I'm sure those Mustang loving folks out there will put and end to this. Remember when the Probe was going to be the "new" Mustang?

A Mustang wagon!? Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about a Mustang sedan and wagon. It seems like this would upset a lot of Mustang fans.

Re: Ford counterring Zeta/Pontiac - Mustang to become a brand
So they're adding another brand that nobody asked for? You just know that after ten years when the hype diminishes, they'll be using the mid-size FWD and the Expedition platform as stopgaps. How many times can they rebadge the Ford Fusion?!?!?!

Great idea, happy for Ford; though I don't understand why they never have original ideas.
Does that mean there will be a return of the Granada? This does make a lot of sense, Ford, Mercury, especially Lincoln, and possibly Jaguar would benefit from this platform.
