"Moving Forward" With More Recalls: Toyota recalls 367,600 Highlanders and Lexus RXs

By Alan Ohnsman
Bloomberg News
Published July 12, 2006, 3:38 PM CDT

Toyota Motor Corp., the world's second-largest automaker, is recalling 367,600 U.S. Highlander and Lexus RX sport-utility vehicles to fix faulty clips that may cause a console panel to fall onto the accelerator.

Toyota's U.S. unit will begin notifying owners of 2004 and 2005 Highlanders and RX 330s and 2006 Highlander Hybrid and RX 400h models later this month, spokesman Bill Kwong said today. Dealers will install stronger versions of two clips that hold a four-inch panel to the right of the gas pedal, he said.

Are you serious?! What's going wrong with these Toyotas? "...may cause a console panel to fall onto the accelerator" ..that dosent sound too good.

Well I'm really shocked at all of these recalls, but I'm happy

This is bordering on ridiculous. Is Toyota having a Summer Blow-Out TOYOTATHON Campaign on recalls this month?

I have to admit being tempted NOT to post this in the recall section as the ticker is getting flooded with Toyota recall news, and they aren't all the same recalls!

While it is weird for so many Toyota recalls to occur, this seems pretty lame. A "console panel" can fall off and possibly land on the accelerator, putting what... 0.1 Newtons of force on it?

Now that one about the 4 Runners running down the highway with no steering control THAT'S a recall...

sounds like Toyota is starting to crack as it nears the top...

Disclaimer to Yoda lovers: not saying its the end of Toyota, just saying it might not quite catch GM clean and easy before it gets a jump in 2008-9

Doesn't seem like a serious recall. But this is at least the 2nd recall this week from Toyota!

I count 4 recall related stories in a few days:

1. Tundra switch recall
2. Highlander RX recall
3. Scion moonroof shattering federal investigation begins this week
4. Toyota officials in Japan accused of criminal negligence for 4Runner issue

No no, we can't point out the obvious. Toyota couldn't build a quality vehicle if their lives depended on it.

Christmas in July? This is likely a problem that isn't very serious, although I suppose the panel could interfere w/ the accelerator.

Re: "Moving Forward" With More Recalls: Toyota recalls 367,600 Highlanders and Lexus RXs

Sometimes, when it rains it pours. Given how many recalls GM/F have had we can't say too much, but it is definately interesting to see what is going on now.

Of course, my opinion of a car manufacturer right now is more influenced by recalls on very new models (last few model years) than on something built 10 years ago or so. I must admit, i am surprised that these seem to be more recent builds (exlcuding the 4runner/surf issue).
