Month of Reckoning: Civic, Corolla, Camry & Accord outsell F-series and Silverado
The sales charts have looked pretty much the same for the last few years: Ford F-series, Chevrolet Silverado, then Toyota Camry.
However, after a dismal month for pickup truck sales, the Civic, Corolla/Matrix, Camry, and Accord (in that order) leaped beyond both the Silverado and F-series to become America's best-selling vehicles for May 2008. The F-series sales softened by 30.6% from May 2007, for a total of 42,973 units moved. The Silverado's sales were off by 42% year-over-year for a total sold of 37,020. In sharp contrast, Toyota was able to herd out an astonishing 52,826 Corollas/Matrixes and 51,291 Camrys during May (of which, 5,999 were hybrids). And taking the top prize was Honda's Civic, with total May sales of an unheard of 53,299 units. Slotting below the Camry for fourth place was the Accord, which racked up 43,728 buyers. No doubt about it, the times have rapidly changed.

Re: Month of Reckoning: Civic, Corolla and Camry pass F-series and Silverado in sales
Right beneath this discussion is another titled, "Toyota's May 2009 Sales: Down 7.9%". I haven't been in there yet, but I'm sure I'll see a bunch of hillbilly "wull look at dat!" moronic nonsense.. But once you read this discussion, it's like - "who cares?". Sure, Toyota's sales are down 7.9%, but look at what they're doing....
It's the big picture that matters...

Interestingly, adjusting for selling days, the Camry was down by 1.5%. But still, this was a seismic shift.

AN: Ford F-Series outsold by both Corolla and Camry
Ford F series loses title as top-selling vehicle in May
Richard Truett Automotive News June 3, 2008 - 2:17 pm ET The Ford F-150 pickup truck has been dethroned as America's favorite vehicle for the first time since 1991 -- by two Toyota sedans. According to preliminary sales figures released by automakers, Ford Motor Co. sold 42,973 F-series trucks in May, while Toyota Motor Corp. sold 52,826 Corollas and 51,291 Camrys. The last time a car outsold the F series was October 1991. Jim Farley, Ford group vice president for marketing and communications, said the F series' loss to Toyota's cars was a "significant development." "But it's not surprising, given the fuel price," Farley said. "That's just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month." Toyota said Corolla sales rose 12.4 percent in May, but were down 9.5 percent for the first five months compared with the same period a year ago. Camry sales have been flat. Re: AN: Ford F-Series outsold by both Corolla and Camry
Elsewhere I've seen people post that the Accord and Civic also outsold the F-Series.
TrueDelta's members report when they trade one car for another. A few months ago I started noticing that many people were trading trucks and luxury cars for compact and midsize mainstream cars. The trend started before the recent gas spike, but has really picked up more recently.

Re: AN: Ford F-Series outsold by both Corolla and Camry
I posted about it here:
http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...lverado-65034/ Of course, the Corolla is combined with the Matrix, which makes as much sense as the Cobalt being mixed in with the HHR.

Re: AN: Ford F-Series outsold by both Corolla and Camry
So why can't GM sell more Malibus? It seems like that market is booming right now. The Camry, Accord, Malibu, and Altima have never been more appealing in design and with gas prices the way they are.
They need to invest in some inventory and some good marketing practices. |
