Mercedes-Benz Sells Over 100,000 S-Classes In A Single Year Motorauthority

Mercedes-Benz’s latest S-Class, the W222, has been with us for just over a year and already it's managed to rack up more than 100,000 sales worldwide. This is the best rate of sales for any S-Class generation in its first full year on the market, and with new S-Class variants coming like the S-Class Coupe, a future convertible and long-wheelbase ‘Maybach’ and ‘Pullman’ models the records are likely to keep tumbling.
Yes, the rate of sales isn’t slowing yet. Since the start of the year, Mercedes has sold 75,391 S-Classes, twice as many as in the same period a year ago (up 105.8 percent to be exact).
The U.S. is the next biggest market for S-Classes, accounting for roughly a quarter of all production.
Good to hear about 25000 s class sedans have sold in the United States for the first year.
Nice car that I see all over the place.
The new s class coupe looks great too.
Interesting that the sales volume is being touted though.....
Part of the charm of vehicles in this market segment is exclusivity and as the S class approaches 100000 units worldwide and 25000 in the USA you have to wonder if the brand will become to common place..
The as class sedan is only topped by E class 350. 4 mastics and 3 series BMW s ...
It was just yesterday as I was cruising home on the Hutchinson river parkway where we were I. Relatively heavy traffic and I was in my black corvette with the roof off in 75 degree October weather and to my left was one BMW 3 series after the next....328 s...335s a couple of 435 and 428 s...one right after the other with maybe a Honda or two between them...
It was a surreal experience to see how many of these ultimate driving machines were trundling along in traffic with their wide ranging owners...
Of course it was back and forth in traffic but it was a bit comical to say the least...
Mercedes should consider care when exploiting volume sales of its top of the line.
My feeling is that the rich are getting richer...and that tesla sales volume has them now touting as class volume to maintain their position as the standard of the world in the uber sedan segment...
The S class amg models are a bit pricey but they do look good.

The S is a ridiculous cash cow. It pays to be good.
I read an article that said luxury sales account for about 10% of the volume globally, yet account for up to 50% of the profits. That's why luxury brands are worth it. The price of admission is very high but so are the rewards.
I'm sure your right...possibly the firing of ferrari CEO by Sergio who wanted more volume has me on that wavelength....
I do see a ton of S class sedans as well as teslas...
I have to say I like the tesla s better....
As cool as the s class is....I dig the silence of tesla along with its blistering zero to sixty acceleration just announced at 3.2 seconds.awd...(from 3.7? With 2 wheel drive)
No gas needed is pretty radical even as gas prices continue to drop....
I'd suggest Mercedes announcement is to sure up the prestige factor of the latest s class as still relevant.....which it is....
Just like that of the competition....from tesla...
It'll be sad when the Cadillac CT6 releases and it's sales are dismal because A) it's not closely styled to the ElMirage and B) because it's rear wheel drive...
Now if the caddy comes in with el mirage styling and AWD that will be a game changer....but from looking at the spy shots recently Mercedes and even tesla have nothing to worry about...
As much as we love, A8, XJ, 7 Series, etc etc, and whatever else Cadillac and Lexus will offer in the future, the truth is, the S Class has earned its place as top dog with generation after generation of excellence.
This is probably true, its the equivalent of the SUV's for GM. If only GM could get serious and offer some more offroad prowess and go for the international market outside of North America and the Middle east with their SUV's. Which means they would need to bring in their international expertise to upgrade their SUV's for international duty.
You're not a real automobile enthusiast if you don't understand how and why the S-Class is the top dog in the segment. Nothing else really compares. Some come close - but that's about it.
Personally I would take a 7 or A8. The S-Class, like all MB products, lacks passion and character. While competent and innovative, it's sort of the default car for rich people with bland taste (although the latest generation is so well done that I've come around a bit). It's also why I think the CT6 can do well, if it comes to production with a bit of swagger, it can do well as the American non-S-class
If I were shopping in this segment, I would not zombie into a dealership, I would test drive quite a few of this class of cars. That is a lot of dough. Though I find as my business grows, I do not have time for these sorts of escapades to test drive cars.
I am sorry guys the last generation of S Class was not that great of a car. It had cheap looking bit here and their and the electronics were horrible. I loved the big boxy ones in the early 90's when they were newer or even the 80's models but the car was for the most part a large E class. It has not earned any top spot it just looked more stately than the BMW or Audi. BMW's have almost in every generation been better than the S class but they do not look like it because the focus on sportiness and not stateliness.
Now this new model looks to be the business and seems that it has earned the top spot. I think that is why you see the sales figures that you do but it is not unmatchable. Someone will come along and give it some competition. Cadillac....just maybe this time and for sure BMW is cooking up something.
The last-gen S-class was actually a great car and that's why it had strong sales right up until it was replaced with the current-gen W222 S-class. For sure, this current S-class has knocked it out of the park though.
Considering it was company founders Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz who collaborated in creating the very first self propelled horseless carraige with a combustion engine in the world, I'd say Mercedes Benz knows a thing or two about a thing or two about cars. While GM and Cadillac were touting climate control and cruise control, Mercedes was touting a 250 pound man sitting on the door sill with the window rolled down and the door opened to show the strength of their door hinges. And the footage from Autobhan surveillance cameras in the 90s that show a drunk guy loosing control of his SLK convertible with the top down, flip it, and walk out from his flipped Merc thanks to the automatic roll bar.
Mercedes has always been about the engineering of their cars first, the luxury comes second, as a result of that engineering. Yes the new S Class has a sensual, organic, and extremely sophisticated interior. But behind all that is one of the worlds best built and best performing automotive chassis.
If I hit the lotto I'd have an S Class in my garage and I don't even like to drive automatics.

It's a good story that means little or nothing today. Kinda like Cadillac heritage from the 1920s.
All car manufacturers know far more than D and B ever imagined.
Everytime I see an S-class, I just think to myself, how the hell is GM going to pull off a car like this. GM has never made any vehicle period thats remotely even in the same league as this car. I had no idea they sold in this kind of volume, wow.
Heck, I'm wondering how they're going to pull off a car like the C-Class.
An ATS with the ELR's interior and MRC would do it for me, but that car doesn't exist.
I still think the Tesla S sedan has all luxury car makers shocked with their success in the 80 to 100 thousand dollar luxury car segment.
I believe Mercedes is touting its unit sales success of this latest generation to provide relevancy to its impressive product advancement.
I think Cadillac is rushing to create a competitor as well....(which I'm not convinced will be all that impressive)
Audi s upcoming A9 luxury sedan is further proof that up market sedans seems to be an important market segment to be in.
I think it's the Chinese market where most growth will occur. I also think Mercedes defeat with the homely Maybach is a modivating factor for Mercedes to tout its success with its wide ranging S class sedans...
Failure with Maybach may in fact one of the best things to happen for Mercedes enthusiasts...
The new s coupe, the amg GT and GTS.....are quite exciting and somewhat affordable although the new as class coupe AMG does get up there in pricing as well...
One of you mentioned an S class sedan possible the S65 at 234 grand.....ouch!
Personally I like the Bentley over the S class as the prices keep climbing...
Not that I'm buying either......I'm just suggesting the Bentley is more of a personal favorite....
That's really astonishing, considering that most car makers would be happy to sell more than a 100,000 of a new model, let alone an expensive one. I wonder how Cadillac will pick up the glove. Interesting to notice the transition from the 70's (when Cadillac's market share was still around 40%) to the 80's also on television. Whereas Jock Ewing drove a Lincoln, his son J.R. drove an S Class.

who cares about exclusitivity, they are trying to sell cars. The only reason they would want exclusivity is to have demand, so that they would buy cars
How does this compare with sales of Cadillac models?
