Meanwhile at Nissan....

Nissan to introduce new family of global cars

Nissan Motor Co. has issued the following press release:

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced it would release a new family of global cars over the next two years with sales of the first variant to start in China in 2006. The Livina Geniss, the name of the Chinese variant, will be the first Nissan car ever to be released in China ahead of other global markets.

(...)

The Livina Geniss will make its world premier at the Guangzhou International Motor Show later this month. Based on the concept of a luxurious, yet practical vehicle, the model seats up to seven people and accommodates a wide variety of customer needs. The exterior features a bold, modern design and is complemented by a highly flexible interior that provides multiple seating arrangements and a high standard specification.

Like the other models in this new global family, the Livina Geniss has been designed and engineered at the Nissan Technical Center in Atsugi, Japan and will be built on a Renault-Nissan Alliance common platform.

The Livina Geniss will be powered by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine with C-VTC (Continuous Valve Timing Control) for improved power and torque. The model will be manufactured at Dongfeng Motor Co.'s (DFL) Huadu plant in Guangdong Province. DFL is Nissan's joint venture in China with Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd. The other variants will be produced at different facilities around the world.

Gotta love those Asian model names This thread is quickly going to turn nasty and off-topic, but I guess it's good to know what's cooking.

Re: Meanwhile at Nissan....

Given how it will be branded Nissan, not Infiniti, and be launched in China first, I'd expect something more in the mold of Renault Grand Scenic or Ford S-Max to replace the forgotten Almera Tino.

think this is closer to mazda 5... alliance or no alliance, they wouldn't make a chevy 7 passenger vehicle with a 1.8 l engine when they could put the latest version of the pushrod 2.8/3.1/3.4/3.5 v6 in it.

It would be fun for someone with knowledge of R/N to come up with possibilities to use their products/components in GMs portfolio -

Re: Meanwhile at Nissan....

The only Nissan rebadge I'd be interested in --- the next Chevy Astro (Nissan Elgrand):

I want a fuel-efficient, versatile 4-cylinder van like this, guess I'll have to move back to Japan some day to actually get one...(the Mazda5 isn't bad, though)

notice the use of the Pathfinder's headlamps....

the Mazda5 is actually a pretty cool little ride. i saw one the other day and mentioned liking it to my wife. she thought i was insane for liking a minivan. whatever, it's still a neat little ride. it'd be cool to see a MazdaSpeed version with the turbo 2.3 that's in the MazdaSpeed6. a hot rod mini-minivan. how cool.

Totally agree with you about the Mazda5. I hope GM offers something like it by the time I need it.

Re: Meanwhile at Nissan....

Heres a thought-why doesn't GMDAT make a minivan for GM since its obvious GM can't make a decent one?

Re: Meanwhile at Nissan....

isn't the mazda5 only a 5 seater though, not a seven seater, at least thats what I remember? Though any synergy that could significantly benefit GM, we should be open to as this is an "alliance" that is being proposed, not a takeover (although it quickly could turn into that; See: Daimler-Benz/Chrysler)
