Mazda5 mid-sized MPV to be revealed at Paris Motor Show
Posted by: kak on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 12:41 PM CET

Mazda Motor Corporation will reveal its all-new Mazda5 mid-sized MPV at next month's Paris Motor Show. The world premiere of Mazda's fifth new-generation global product will take place on Thursday 23 September. Fulfilling the promise of the Mazda MX-Flexa concept - revealed at the Geneva Motor Show and shown to the UK for the first time at Birmingham Motor Show this year - the new Mazda5 will deliver flexible interior design coupled with car-like driving enjoyment into the mid-sized MPV (C-MAV) segment around the world.

Designed from the inside out, Mazda5 will provide mid-sized MPV comfort and a unique "6 + One" packaging concept that provides flexible space inside the cabin. Mazda5 will be available in the UK with seating for seven passengers or as a six-seater with additional storage capacity.

In line with Mazda's Zoom-Zoom promise, Mazda5 will deliver a fresh exterior design with two, wide-opening sliding rear doors and driving dynamics that customers have come to appreciate from all Mazda new-generation vehicles - Mazda6, Mazda2, Mazda RX-8 and Mazda3. It will be available in the UK with a choice of two petrol engines and a common-rail turbo diesel engine.

Details of the car will be announced during the Mazda press conference scheduled to begin at 11:15am on Thursday, 23 September 2004 in Hall 1 at the Paris Motor Show.

Yeah, all I gotta say is this will probably punish the CSV's, GM can't get the Lambda out soon enough.

Very nice and sleek...the MPV has always been an 'okay' minivan...I wouldn't dare be seen in an Minivan/MPV, but it really looks good.

Better looking than the CSV's or the "Freestar" (though substantially smaller).

That's not saying much. At least for the CSV's.

The new Mazda looks nice.

(am i really saying this??)

wow, that looks good. that is a great looking minivan. small or not, that's the one i'd go for if i were to get one. sweet. i can't believe i think a minivan looks sharp, but it sure does. good stuff there.....

seems to be more of a Pacifica type vehicle than a minivan. or is the Pacifica a minivan too? oh, i don't know. it seems to be perfect for a family. seating and cargo room, but not too large. good, good, good.

Yes, that is a good looking minivan. Now if it was only a little bit bigger...

I always liked the MPV best of all the minvans in the market, the driving qualities have always been superior (compare a RWD 1-st gen MPV V6 against a Caravan of same era with V6 and see...). But being a minivan, it still sucks. And the MPV has had a less than stellar reliability.

CSV was a bad idea, innovation is required in the market NOW, not just a pinocchio facelift. Trying to make the minivans more like an SUV, seems only to make the Rendezvous without a peg to stand on.

For a Minivan the Mazda5 looks great. GM, DC, Ford, Honda are in for so serious competition.
I think the size is fine. Minivans have been getting larger and larger to the point where they are not so mini and then people complain that a minivan uses too much fuel.

Is this even coming to the states?-- maybe I missed it, but I don't think we should be making CSV comparisons yet. Wouldn't the Zafira be a much more worthy competitor for this?

Well, Mazda is a Ford brand, afterall. Too bad they can't give the Freestar some style, instead of just a new name. The CSV's wouldn't be quite the joke that they are if they had reworked the rest of the body, instead of just the nose.

I'm a 2000 MPV owner, so I guess I'm biased.

I don't think this is a replacement for the current MPV, the Mazda 5 is based off the 3 chassis, and will only be available with 4 cylinder engines. The upcoming MPV replacement is rumored to be off the 6 chassis, but should have similar styling to the 5. The 5 is more of a tall "people mover", more along the lines of the Vibe, but wider and with sliding doors. I think they are still deciding on if they are going to bring this to the US.

This is most certainly not the MPV replacement, which will be built on the Mazda6 platform. Rather it's a small mpv of a type that isn't sold in North America, although Mazda has made noises that this one may be.

Essentially it's a C-MAX with sliding doors.

This is why Mazda kicks some serious tail.

Sleek, fast looking cars that at the same time aren't too brash.

Believe it or not, I wanna trade in my Mustang for a Mazda3...

The Freestar and its Mercury equivalent, the Monterrey, will eventually get a full redesign within the next few years and there's a good shot that they too will share the Mazda 6 platform like the future MPV. The thing I find more interesting though is how so many Ford products, with the exception of trucks and most SUVs, are going to be based on platforms from Ford's foreign brands within the next few years.
