Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Line

Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln division pulled a Super Bowl ad that depicts a clergyman tempted by the new Mark LT luxury pickup after several victims of clergy sex abuse complained it trivialized their trauma.
In the 30-second spot, a clergyman finds the key to the new Mark LT truck in the collection plate, checks out the pickup and falls in love with it. At the end of the ad, the minister places the letters "LT" on the church marquee to spell out next week's sermon -- "LUST."

The Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests said the spot "trivializes childhood sex crimes."

Ford spokeswoman Sarah Tatchio said the ad drew no complaints in tests, and that Ford made certain the clergyman depicted could not be taken for a Catholic priest.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

You know, seriously, just suck it up. The victims want people to feel sorry for them based on what happened, but then they complain to no end. I thought the Corvette commercial fiasco was bad but this is asinine.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

More BS from a society of the terminally offended. We Americans are getting so thin skinned. Ofcourse if you put a young boy in the truck, you'd have a MadTV skit. Child abuse in any form is a horrendous crime but the commercial described doesn't mention, imply, trivialize or attempt to benefit from what happened to these people. It sounds like a group of people trying to draw attention to themselves.

Thumbs down Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

This is the exact reason why most american commercials are lame and boring. Companies like GM/Ford get thousands of letters from groups everyday about the slightest bit of a non PC commercial. When we come up with ideas, the head marketing people at these companies are so scared to approve anything that they water it down to a point of stupidity. And if when one gets through, it gets pulled off the air because of a couple of 100 letters, and the company is scared of losing sales. Americans are to sensitive to anything that might be controversal. Its a shame I have seen billiant, funny award winning comercials get canned because the fear of backlash. Just another part of our society that has been pacified by VERY conservitive minority and their fears.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

See, this is why Americans stopped being nice to each other. There are lawsuits left and right over stupid things like this. Everybody bitches and moans about things that "offend" them, and instead of just trying to get a little moral/emotional support from friends, they turn to lawyers. Shutup and deal, because nobody actually cares as much as you want - it's how the world works.

If I offended anyone by my post, then I think I'm quite satisfied.

Clearly Ford was aware this add might cause a problem.

However, I don't understand how comedians, including Leno and Letterman, can joke about the situation, which is trivializing it more than this ad (if either are). What about all the Michael Jackson jokes? Our society often jokes about serious matters, that DOES NOT mean we don't think they are serious.

Although I understand the seriousness of the situation, and I know people who were abused as children, I think this group should focus its efforts more on the Catholic church which covered it up rather than a company that is trying to sell a truck.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

Although this is still quite stupid, the complaints are a little more substantial than those raised against the "Day dream" Corvette ad. That add was pulled on the notion that some child somewhere in America might be stupid enough to want imitate it, and at the same time smart enough to steal a car. This however, does offend some real people, and does in a sense make light of something that should not in good taste be made light of yet.
While comedians like Jay Leno and David Letterman are paid specifically to cross the lines of good taste and entertain people, Ford, who is afterall trying to sell a product aimed at mainstream Americans, must always remain safely within good taste.
I'm not saying I support Lincoln pulling the ad - I really want to see it now actually. I'm just saying that there is more blame in this case to place on the automaker.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

Oh, yeah, they could have offended the Christian community. Thats good for business.

Come on guys, this is not even close to the same thing as the BS corvette commercial. This deals with religion. They did the right thing by pulling the ad.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

This is clearly ridiculous. I've SEEN the ad. There was nothing about it that could even be remotely construed as making any sort of reference to anything the groups protesting it allude to.

This is just another case of Political Correctness run amok. And this problem will continue to just get worse until the average Joe Taxpayers of America (you and me) take a stand against it.

Are there any groups that are like the anti-ACLU that support people being able to say and advertise whatever the heck they want? Sign me up.

Re: Lincoln Pulls SuperBowl Ad

speaking as a CHristian (and Catholic) I have to say I am NOT offended by this. Its just an ad, and a clever one. So what are clergy suggesting that they arent perfect and sometimes sin? So what, everyone does. Grow some thicker skin.

Actually, Im thinking of leaving Catholicism and possibly organized religion in gweneral because of htings like this. So much retarded arrogance and hypocrisy and greed is in the Church that Im quickly losing taste in it. I answer to God and his son, not some delusional man with percieved self importance.

WTF? That is the lamest thing I've ever heard. Now if Clergymen want to complian, I could understand, but what does lust for a TRUCK have to do with the victims?

Ridiculous. America, land of the offended and politically correct.

Nick I see you really don't know what the aclu stands for. The aclu has gone to court and protected people's rights to say thing even when the main street american don't like what's said. Actually the aclu would be on the side of this commerical being aired.
