Lienerts: Fusion is up for the fight

Fusion is up for the fight
Stylish Ford is formidable competitor to Accord, Camry

By Anita Lienert and Paul Lienert / Special to The Detroit News

IVONIA -- Eric R. Reed trailed the 2006 Ford Fusion sedan we were testing for a couple miles up I-275 and then seemed overjoyed to catch up to us. He rolled down the window of his Oldsmobile Intrigue at a stoplight to pepper us with questions about the car that replaces the Ford Taurus.

"That front end is smokin'!" hollered Reed, a 47-year-old Detroit police officer. "Is that the new Ford? Can you pull it over?"
In the parking lot of the Laurel Park Place shopping center, Reed and his companion, Brenda L. Franklin, 52, a retired General Motors Corp. clerk who lives in Southfield, hopped into the Fusion, chattering away about its merits.
"The front end caught my eye," said Reed, positioning himself in the back seat.
"This is superb. The only thing it needs is chrome wheels."
Franklin, from her perch in the front passenger's seat, was just as effusive.
"I'm lovin' it, too," she said. "I've got to get on the phone. My mother just bought a 2005 Taurus, and I've got bad news for her. She should have waited."
We live for that kind of scene because it confirms what we already thought: The 2006 Ford Fusion, and its sister vehicle, the 2006 Mercury Milan, are such satisfying and stylish vehicles that they may signal the turning point for the battered Dearborn automaker.

No standard ABS, just like the Impala. What's up with that? Still a great looking car IMO, and pricing is good for the higher-end models.

Do you own a 4Runner? Just a heads up in case Toyota forgets to send you its recall notice.

What constitutes a savage beating? I understand that your simple brain cannot grasp the rules of grammar, but if you're interested in a wager you're going to have to drop the rhetoric and use some detail.

My prediction: ricers will live in his parents basement until he's 56, borrowing his mom's Odyssey to go out and drag race with Corvettes on Friday nights.

A prediction based on an intelligent comparison of two vehicles is one thing... spouting out your love for imports ONCE AGAIN on a GM website is just tired and pointless.

Re: Lienerts: Fusion is up for the fight

a savage beating means just that: it will fail to reverse ford's slide in market share:

let's see who sells how much by dec 2006.

my predictions 1) camry; 2) accord

the fusion will not even hold the 3rd place

i have bookmarked this page and will give you a reminder at that time.

A savage beating isn't necessarily the same thing as a failure to reverse Ford's market share slide. There is no way to predict how much sales of lame duck models like Freestar and Ranger and LS will fall next year, so that does not supply a solid foundation for a wager. Maybe if Ford had ever claimed that the Fusion would single handedly raise the market share of an entire company in its first model year, you could use that as a bet. Otherwise, it is completely stupid, and a fine example of your typical thought processes.

Betting that the Fusion will outsell the Accord and Camry when the plant the Fusion is built at can't even produce Fusions in those volumes doesn't make any sense, either. Try again.

I don't know why you are bookmarking this before you've made a realistic wager and before anyone has agreed to a wager.
