Lexus GS450h Hybrid Auctioned Off $4,000 Below MSRP at Hollywood

"While we anxiously await the arrival of the Lexus GS450h hybrid, a couple of A-list celebrities, directors and agents had the chance to spend some time with the car and a chance to win the high-performance hybrid luxury sedan. At the Oceana fundraising dinner Hollywood personalities started the bidding below MSRP. The bidding then ended very soon when Keith Addis, Ted Danson’s manager, raised his paddle for $54,000. The lucky man bought the car for $4,000 below the vehicle’s base price. Seems like Lexus isn’t to hot with Hollywood celebrities who already own cars like Rolls Royce, Bentley or even a Ferrari."

Wow...thats a good price off. Too bad I'm not a celebrity, or that I want a Lexus hybrid.

Harshly as you put it, I think you've more or less nit the nail on the head. Even if their products have risen to the general standard of European manufacturers, the virtues of a Lexus tend appeal to one's head rather than their heart. I don't think anyone disputes their integrity so much as they do their desirability, which I don't think is particularly high. Much as I respect Lexus' accomplishments, if I was in the salary cap of those celebrities, I wouldn't have bothered.

Re: Lexus GS450h Hybrid Auctioned Off $4,000 Below MSRP at Hollywood

Does one auctioned-off-below-MSRP Lexus paint a realistic picture of the entire Lexus Division? Hardly. After all, this is the same GS450h that Kiplinger's recently praised for its higher than average resale value (3 years/5 years): 63%/49%. (Of course, this is the same magazine that awarded an honorable mention to the STS-V in the category of "SEDANS $45,000 AND OVER" (while picturing a CTS-V)).

Don't be distracted by the headline; this is a clear case of much ado about nothing, if you ask me.

I actually like the new GS, and a hybrid option is nice...just I can't go around buying $50,000+ new cars every year or two.

It looks like "Hollywood Types" want a hybrid that is more of a political statement than a luxury statement.

If those types are spending 50-60K for a car, it seems to be an Escalade or Navigator.

Sorry, Lexus. You just aren't as trendy as the king of bling.

BINGO !! The problem for Toyota is that they didn't get it. I think Toyota incorrectly assumed that any Hybrid coming off their production lines would be greeted with Hollywood fanfare.

They should have paid more attention to Honda's dismal hybrid sales of everything but the insight.

That isn't too fancy and the prestige level for Hollywoodites is about that of a Plymouth Sundance to us.

True. Ted Dansons manager isnt exactly a A List celebrity. So its not like its gonna be getting a lot of press but it seems to have made it this far.

Re: Lexus GS450h Hybrid Auctioned Off $4,000 Below MSRP at Hollywood

Read the what the idiots on autospies.com write...they are talking about how its great that they sold it under msrp and how this is going to take over hollywood. Haha WTF? A Shelby GT500 sold for 600k way way over MSRP the Lexus just doesn't grab anyone. Its a Lexus...who cares about a Japanese luxury car in Hollywood when they can buy a Bentley or Rolls-Royce?

Re: Lexus GS450h Hybrid Auctioned Off $4,000 Below MSRP at Hollywood

From what it looks like, it seems that Lexus may have overestmated itself in the super performance luxury segment. The idea they had was good, but the car isnt a stand out against what its compitition. There is only one thing that really strikes me funny about the GS450h and is that Lexus made a performance hybrid, and can someone tell me is when did Lexus start selling oxymorons?

When people began to disregard the benefit of the engine not running in stop & slow traffic. A performance Lexus is capable of dealing with that by using an electric motor. The competition wastes lots gas by depending solely on a grossly oversized engine for that need.

Also, when people began to dismiss the importance of the SULEV emission rating, which the Lexus hybrid delivers.
