Kei-Car Spotted in US - Daihatsu (Toyota)

The resolution on these stink, thanks to only having a camera phone. However, good thing I actually had said camera phone.

I drove off-campus yesterday to grab some lunch, and caught a squadron of BorgWarner test vehicles parked in a plaza.

One of which was a JDM Daihatsu Mira AVY.

Two things blew me away about this thing. First, it's really small. I know Kei cars are small, but I think having never seen one in the flesh, it's somewhat shocking when you finally witness one.

The other...is how attractive it's interior - in terms of both materials and IP/trim design - seem to be.

From Daihatsu's own website...

Well, if nothing else, it's interesting. And it's definately less stark than that of the Aveo.

Re: Kei-Car Spotted in US

Could it be the replacement here for the xA? Daihatsu's triumphant return to the U.S. market?

The interior on that certainly blows away the Scion's, or any of our subcompacts for that matter.

Sadly though, anything more than the parking lot dent looks like it could be fatal to both the car and the passengers.

.05 litre cars seldom ever do well in the US. Would you like to be the driving one while merging on to the freeway with a highly distracted mom on a cell phone in Yukon XL running right up to your bumper?

With a car that small, I reserve the right to move it if you can't get it parked within the lines of a parking spot.

It seems as if Toyota is now planning on selling kei-cars in NA, GM needs to introduce it's own kei-cars, who knows, they might be the next big thing.

Mabye it's the angle, but it looks like it could gooble up the Avalon parked next to it...

I love camera phones. Great job! I think there is a market for small cars in the US.

One word for that exterior:

"YUCK!"

Looks like an elongated/heightened 1968 Renault 10.

Nice looking interior though.

Never get me in one. That thing is a pile, but I also think the Aveo is a pile.

These new kei cars have 0.66 liter(660cc) engines(the max displacement for a kei car)
base engines produce about 58 hp while the turbocharged versions produce around 64 hp(max horsepower for a kei car).
Its not really that bad since they only weigh about 1780 lbs.
